I would never buy a car because of it's brand, it's all down to the model of car. I get 23mpg out of my car and it just sufferred a dual mass flywheel failure which meant a new €1000 clutch from an RS and i still love it. Different people wan't different things from cars.

However Kia and Hyundai have been making impressive new cars.

Take a HT lead off and hold it near the engine block while cranking. Make sure you don't electrocute yourself. Is there a nice big blue spark?

Has no one noticed what Ed said? I also agree with his suggestion of it being a sensor, probably covered in shit from this awesome weather. Find out where the crank sensor is and blast it with WD40 Kryt. I can almost guarantee that will be the AIDS associated with your car.

Edit - Bell ends drive Audis and BMW's, Jap > Repmobiles.

Sorry I am no mechanic so can't help with the original question.

For my money bang for buck would see me get a Kia Sportage. 7 year warranty a shit load of toys and a very reasonable price. So for my money it is a win. Company car wise I would go for a higher speced Skoda or Seat before getting a Audi or VW and I have never liked BMW's.

Oddly enough I was checking those off my list this morning. To a point anyway, only so much I can do when it's wetter than an otter's vajayjay.

The crank sensor will be towards the bottom of the engine, obviously, pointing towards the crank pulley, it may be behind a plastic shield or it may not. It should be the first thing you try Krytbacon. I am pretty sure you can find a schematic for your engine from somewhere.

I reckon Ed = correct on this.

Edit - What engine is it/exact car model?

Could also be a failed head gasket. The thing is though, try things that won't cost you any money before you go replacing sensors that might actually be ok.

A blast of WD40 will help if the sensor is shit up, could be a really cheap fix.

Everything had already been de-gunkified beforehand. That was what I did second after checking all fuses :)

It's now running though! Spent some time with it this morning with the father in law. Beforehand I tried it this morning and it damn-near started. That apparently rang some bells with him (ex mechanic for stock cars etc) and suspected a fuel issue - i.e. I'd flooded the engine with my attempts, and the procedure for clearing it (accelerator fully down then start) I wasn't trying long enough. I'd always known not to run the starter motor for too long, so whilst jumping the battery to his shitroen ran it for 30 seconds - then life! Spluttered into motion, half a tank of fuel dumped out the exhaust (seemingly), stank like shit for a while. Checked for any leaks or other problems, then gave it a bloody good run to check and charge.
Acceleration is FAR better than it was before, and no doubt with the arcing it was also missing beforehand. So with some luck, better fuel consumption too.

So, the beast lives on! Poo to the BMW suggestors! ;) And of course many many thanks to the folks with sensible suggestions :)

Hopefully get a good few years out of it still - for anyone interested it's a 1.8 VTEC (yo!) lump in a 1999 Accord Saloon. Nearly this:
eipmb

Green, with spoiler, decent alloys. Not a spec of rust on it anywhere.

If it doesnt start on easy start..not even a cough..then its ignition or crank timebelt mis alignement..have you turned it over with a spark plug out and connected to the lead so you can see an actual spark

You should now check your oil level, depending on how much fuel was in each cylinder, some may have seeped through and diluted your engine oil.

Already done - gave it a thorough check before driving it any distance. Oil level exactly as it was.
Drives like a dream currently.
