what would you guys here class as too much?

im 20 and a student. my social life is on the go 24/7 most of the time. in this last week alone ive probably drank around 1.4 litre of vodka, a lot of lager/beer and some bottles of wine.

people may say thats too much for health reasons etc

or

thats too much you will turn into an alcoholic

thing is, i can drink this much but never the next day do i feel i need a drink to start the day off etc. the only time i drink is with friends, or if im chilling on the computer etc i may have a can or two.

so these days, what would YOU class as too much. and im not talking about what the government think. they say no more than 1.4 units a day or some shit.

and btw - please dont go on and on trying to tell me im ruining my health. i know i am, i know exactly what alcohol does ;)

you dont need to worry about it now, once you've finished uni you will get into a routine of not drinking that much.

I've been drinking like a fish for 3 years now, I dont get the urge to drink on my own you wont become an alcoholic, I can get on perfectly without drinking indefinately if I wanted. Alcolhism is mainly a result of depression, as people get into the habit of drowning out their sorrows, but its counter-intuitive as it actually hightens them.

As for the health reasons you're young you're body will recover quickly, but while your at university fucking live the life, you've got another 60/70+ years after for your body to recover.

Drinking is quite simple.

Routinely drinking non-excessive amounts is fine as the body adapts itself to taking control of the drink. Binge drinking or constantly changing the levels that you drink is not good for the body because it can not predict your drinking patterns. For example:

say you have one glass of wine a day for a week and then on sunday you get totally plastered and drink the equivalent of twenty glasses of wine. Your body will be damaged, perhaps not obvious to the eye, but it will be damaged.

That said, five glasses of wine a day is actually less harmful since the body, over an extensive period, will learn how to combat this rather effectively.

As for too much. IMO its a silly question. People have different tolerance levels. I've seen mates get drunk on a few glasses, other's don't get drunk at all no matter how much they have.

drinking causes permanent liver damage, the reason so many people are dieing in their early 30s from chronic liver disease.
that said, i will still go out and have a "good night" every now and then. i wont go and get bladdered every week because i dont see the need.

the wikipedia article on alcoholism is actually quite good. i suggest some people read it to understand alcoholism better than "never the next day do i feel i need a drink to start the day off".

you don't need to drink to have a good time.
or, if you do need to drink to have a good time, there is a problem.

gah look whats at the bottom of the list of health probs excessive long term drinking can cause:
death from many sources, primarily alcohol toxemia
pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas (both the acute and chronic form)
heart disease, including dilated cardiomyopathy
polyneuropathy, or damage to the nerves leading to poor sensation of pain and impaired mobility
cirrhosis of the liver, a chronic disease characterized by destruction of liver cells and loss of liver function, and its numerous complications, including bleeding from esophageal varices
depression, insomnia, anxiety, and suicide
increased incidence of many types of cancer, including breast cancer, head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer and colorectal cancer
nutritional deficiency of folic acid, thiamine (vitamin B1) and several others
Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a neuropsychiatric disorder caused by thiamine deficiency that results from poor nutrition in alcoholics
sexual dysfunction

thats gotta be on a blokes top five reasons to cut down lol;)

dont worry about it atm tbh

Your a student and most of my student mates were waking up at lunch time and carrying on drinking till the next day and not one of them has a problem. That said everyone is different. But worrying about it isnt good, try drinking a little less when you go out or possibly not drink a couple of times

Best to drink loads now whilst you are young than say in your 40s. Most people who go out on the lash at weekends will drink more in a weekend than George Best used to at the time he had just finished playing football!

I usually drink on weekends and some random week days (depending on how's it going) and always with some friends... I find it funny and esential... We all know that alcohol is not healthy but you need more than that in my opinion to become ill and alcoholism does not depend on how much you drink, it's based on a dependency that leads you to drink more and more... It's just like drugs... some people can smoke hashish or whatever and be not dependant while others with less quantity will... I think its linked to your life style and how depressed or not you are before discovering that world...

I would class "too much" as drinking for the sole purpose of getting drunk. I know we live in a society that seems hell-bent on getting gassed at every oppertunity, but I really dont understand it.

To me, enjoying alcohol is a few drinks for the taste and the relaxation things that comes with it. Its nothing about the drunkeness that comes after it (if you have too many! :)) A night out for a few drinks, a load of laughs, a take away and still being able to drive home (legally!) is, in my opinion, much more fun than stumbling about, trying to chat up people (sometimes members of the opposite sex), getting a kebab, throwing it up 10mins later, getting a taxi home, get overcharged since you cant tell the difference, falling up the stairs and waiting 3 hours before NASA stop using your room as a gravity testing chamber before you can get to sleep.

From a psychological point of view, I would say that if you are asking how much is too much, you have already passed the point of too much in your own mind. You are just waiting for someone to agree with you :) Besides, cut down a bit and you'll have more cash for doing the other student things (actually, are there other things that students do? :))

I dont usually drink during the week, but thats czo im at school, this will all change in the summer.

The government, and various health organisations put people who consume more than 20units in a week as drinking accessivly or something.

All i can really say is my average night out consists of a few pints (6-8) a few double jd's and coke (2-3) and a few strawpedos (usually about 4), then shots.

thats all of about 20 shots, but in one night. This is an average night out, we usually have some drinks before we go out aswell but, and at times this has been the average drinking pattern of a day, for the best part of a week.

Am i damaging myself? yeh, am i gunna stop? not for a few years, but inevitably i will.

You may want to look into balancing your drinking, with a good diet and supplements which will help your body cope.

My main worry is liver failure, or damaging my pancrease, but, since i usually take a few months off during hte year and not drink, aswell as being in relativly good shape, its not that much of a worry. Although, i havent drank in over a month now coz of exams :(

Lol at this "don't worry, sort it out later, your young", I took that attitude when I was in my late teens/early 20's and I turned into this heavy drinker, smoker who was 25k in debt and had to buy clothes at www.highandmighty.com (i love the way they use those words - big / mighty / firm - anything to avoid the word FAT)

Its taken me around 3 years to drop the drink, drop smoking, get the debt down to 16k and starting to watch the belly go down.

Sure have some fun while your young - but set some limits :) I'm gona be like 35 before my life is back on track - what a waste huh ?

Blimey Tea, if anything anyone could say would knock the urge to be a party beastie out of me that'd be it.

it really is true what folk say tbh you dont need to be pissed out of your tree to have a good time, usually ive gone out and got blind stinking drunk and had "a great time" when i woke up the next day i felt shit and it really wasnt that good a time anyway, havd had much more fun tipsey or sober tbh.

any hoo well done on getting your shit together tears people can sit back and say its easy but its not so good on you bud.

thats all of about 20 shots:(

1 second, you drink this in 1 night out? Including drinks before hand? At 16?

For a start how do you afford £81 per night :(

Personally, i dont believe it :fluffle:

I agree :D I'm a lightweight, 3-4 beers is really my limit if I want to be able to remember the next day! But I would imagine 6-8 pints of non-watered down beer would have anyone singing :)

5 days of hardcore drinking was too much for me, was shaking all sunday and couldnt sleep...
But guess to much drinking is when you drink to feel normal.

the official "safe" upper limit is 28 units per week for males and 21 units for females, with the recommended upper limit being 21 units per week for males 14 units for females.
interesting to see how many know what a unit is as well.

When I was a student I used to drink quite a bit (Remember working it out once when questioned - thought it'd been a very light week - worked out at about 3x the official safe limits).

Then I got into a discussion with a mate who was trying to get me to try various other drugs. I said "I don't need drugs to enjoy myself", he said "What about Alcohol?". Trapped in that argument, I gave up alcohol for 3 months (over Christmas, which wasn't easy).

Best thing I ever did. Now I know that I don't need it, and can have it or not have it depending how I feel, and all the societies pressures to drink are irrelevant to me.
