any apps you want to run thru WINE needs to be installed/registred thru WINE first, but i am told by the clever f00s on irc that after this you can drag your old steam stuff over. just waiting on some sata to usb cables to be delivered now to try it.
I had done a complete system wipe, dumped Vista and re-installed both Ubuntu and XP from scratch on a nice new 500Gb sata drive I bought especially for them.
Got Ubuntu installed ok, and re-installed OSS and removed alsa, as it doesn't support my soundcard (an X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion series card), but it seems completely random as to whether sound will either work at all, or it'll work on the desktop in Totem etc, but flash video will not play any sound or neither will work, or both will. Then it'll change again when I reboot.
Grrr.
It's a damn pity, because I'll miss using Ubuntu for day to day stuff, and using XP purely as a gaming OS, which was the original plan, but Ubuntu has had to be knocked on the head until such time as alsa properly supports an X-Fi card such as mine.
Things I liked about Ubuntu:
Virtual desktops
Compiz-fusion (especially having my four desktops rotate on the gl cube!)
Apt-get & repositories (why oh why can't Windows have something like this?)
The terminal (sometimes it's just damn quicker typing the program's name rather than hunting through menus)
Gparted (superb disk partitioner)
Gnome (such a nice and neat front end, really will miss it)
Rythymbox & Banshee (still undecided which I liked the best)
Better security
Things I disliked about Ubuntu:
You couldn't set the amount that the mousewheel would scroll universally throughout the OS - that's a royal pain.
Mouse sensitivity was off and could never get just right.
Constant sound issues (as above).
Overall it's a fantastic OS, it's just I need sound as most of my day to day pc use needs sound (either for music or watching online video etc). Damn shame, but I'll be keeping a close eye on Main Page - AlsaProject for X-Fi support, as OSS is pretty scattershot.
It's a pain, because my Wubi installation worked perfectly, but none of the 3 re-installations since have worked as well.
I use / used Fedora for a while in a VMWare environment. I'm not ready to adopt a full on Linux distro yet, or rather Linux isn't ready for me. I use too many proprietory apps in windows to go full blown.
If I feel the need to stroke my penguin then I just fire up VMWare
