Well I've just been at the hospital for a gastroscopy as I have had bad reflux problems for a while, so off I pop to have this device pushed down my throat and into my stomach to check things out. Now I have a bad ass gag reflex anyway, so they spray my throat to numb it and wait, and I was expecting something this size:

So imagine my displeasure when something more like this appeared:

Except it had flashing lights and no-end of other bits, as if it had been abducted by aliens and they had enhanced it into some kind of cyber-hosepipe.

It was NOT a pleasurable experience. The Doctor doing it had to abandon the procedure (I'm the first person in his 18 years of practise he's failed on - special or what?). I'm not a panicky person, but the feeling and experience was totally horrible, it's like throwing up but 50 times worse. And now I have a bad-ass sore throat.

I just thought I'd share, there seem to have been quite a few medical posts recently :)

Too many "hose" jokes there...

*thinks*

Ah what the hell.

Like it's the first time you've had something long stuck down your throat! :D

I had to go through the same procedure about 6 months ago and it just feels so un-natural.

And because it traps all the gas in your stomach, when they pull the camera out you emit the most god awful viking like burp that smells of the disgusting spray they use to numb your throat.....

not something I'd try again tbh

He couldn't get the scope past my Hiatus Hernia - but it's fair to say I was making those big-ass volcano burps/retches long before he got close to there. My eyes were in total watering mode.

Could you not get sedated for it? :p

That was the first thing I mentioned, that I had a strong gag reflex and numbing my throat wasn't likely to work. They said that unless it's absolutely necessary they avoid the general anaesthetic due all the complications it can cause.

And then after they abandoned the procedure, I was too distressed for sedation this time round. Barium drink next! ;)

Could have been worse.

They could have stuck it down your throat after it was stuck up your ass (or worse, someone else's)
