You do wonder how hard it would be for them to find an account I mean really, about 2 years ago my BB acct went unpaid for like 5 weeks or something, kept waiting for it to be closed.

i am interested to know how they lost it in the first place, and as this if your personal data there could also be a privacy issue around it

Seems like they are breaking the law by not giving yo the right to access it or have lost it. Send a report to the French information commissioner about them, and there lack of data protection:
