I was an old BW Dialupper too! HPB were the bestest at CS, dont let those LPBs with their fancy broadband tell you otherwise!

Those HPB were fucking pro when they finally got good connections. :D

It was funny back then when everyone was on slow connections and when someone with a low ping joined everyone started asking them where they got their connection/etc.

Yeah ECA. I remember playing UT instagib and Tac Ops.... lowest ping on server would be some dude on ISDN with a ping of 180. Then someone on ADSL would join with a single digit ping. WTF??? would ensue :D

Incidentally, I've noticed that my ping peaked around 2002 - was thirty and below every time. Even on quicker connections at my folks house, I can't get that latency anymore. Even here in US, where I have high speed cable, I can't get it below 60.

The networks are flooded now, the amount of routing required and the shite being fed through them has pretty much killed the ultra low ping era. Blame iPlayer and Utorrent. ;)

'tis about the community rather than the game.

I'm a member of what could be described as an "IRC clan". We have all known each other online for years and years now and whilst games come and go, we always try to get together with a couple other clans for a LAN twice a year.

One of the reasons I hardly play online these days is that I just don't have enthusiasm for joining a random server with a bunch of whiny Americans - there isn't any spirit and it's just not the same when you can't slag them on IRC afterwords :)

it scares me even thinking about how much i ended up spending those days

Wow that takes me back.

I used to have a PACE modem that gave me sub 110 pings.

My parents bailed me out of a couple of hefty phone bills (£300+) and even when those freephone redhotant accounts did the rounds it was still a major bug bear of theirs. So much so that me and my dad had a big falling out over it and he basically kicked me out.

All over ActionQuake2. Ah, those were the days!

And how many of us who got hassle about "wasting time and money" on the computer now earn our crust (and a decent wage as well) in the IT industry? :)

Hehe, Jobbie with his bloody aug and accurate flashing.

It's annoying how good BW dial up was, made me spend money on it even though I had free dial up as well. It was just the best for low latency dial up.

That's because the Cisco gear they bought with all that VC money was massively over-specced. I know, I saw the bills.

But isn't all Cisco kit massively over-specced for the job it does? ;)

Actually the dialup was just as great before we had the VC money, in those days we had a Cisco AS53000 (max capacity 120 lines).
