Just read this, combined with the economic news from the U.S. it looks like the shit is going to hit the fan any day now. Regardless, $140 a barrel means another 2p a litre at the pump. $170 a barrel would push us to £1.50 a litre or close. :( OPEC have said they expect it to hit that price by the end of the summer yet suprise suprise Libya cut production to help drive up the price even further.

We are being held hostage by speculators and a middle east oil cartel.

Don't forget the government. Two thirds of the price is tax.

You are only being held hostage if you deside to use their product. You could just avoid it and find another solution.

As long as people keep paying for the product they will keep pushing the prices.

Everyone at work has been told to Car share and in some areas people are clubbing together for a mini-bus :)

I'm one of the car sharers, so it works out a little cheaper (i just chip in for fuel between 2-3 people)

You can't avoid buying food and 30% of the cost of food on the shelves is transport costs much of which is paying for fuel. Even if you tried your hardest it is impossible to stop sucking on the oil tit completely unless you goto somewhere remote and become a hermit living off the land.

while it is possible, some of us are either "lazy" or just want to drive.

personally im not gonna start cycling 40 miles a day to goto work and bac.

is that lazy, or reasonable?

what food are you buying though?

i know 'natural' and unprocessed food is pretty stable.

only price increases ive had -

15 eggs went from £1 > 1.15 > 1.25 > 1.50 over about 6 months.
porridge oats have gone up a few pence per kilo over a few months.
i think frozen chicken has gone up £1 a kilo but it depends where youre shopping really. aldi etc its still the same price.
fruit prices are being slashed in half atm along with veg.

im not saying you personally eat shit food but the peoiple who do are probably the ones getting it worse. those price increases are not really massive in the sceme of it. a few extra ££ a month.

none food stuff like soaps, deodrants etc. well thats an easy one. only buy whats on offer, half price stuff or 3 for 2 etc. and buy loads of it to last a few months or even a year. if its half the cost now there is no point buying just 1 or 2.

tuna went on offer at one point and i bought about 20-30 tins of it, along with oatcakes. got 10 boxes i think of those last week.

The price hikes haven't really hit yet because your large supermarkets were making such rediculous profits before that they can afford to absorb the costs for the moment, and can't simply jack up their prices as they will lose to the competition.

The way it's heading that's not going to be the case forever and as soon as they approach break even point, the expenses will be passed strainght on to you.

Stuff on offer is only on offer to get you in buying the none offer stuff. If everyone started only buying on offer stuff I can assure you that it wouldn't be offered anymore.

maybe these people need self control then. i go in with a shopping list and buy exactly what is on it. if there is something the equivalent on offer i buy that instead.

i dont go flying around shotting shit in my trolley left and right.
but if i need deodrant, lynx is 2.50 a can or gillete is reduced down to 70p, why would i buy the lynx?
same, my other example of oat cakes there one particular kind that was 75p a box while the rest was 1.25. i didnt buy the cheap one and then go around throwing random shit into my trolley, which is what youre saying i think?

i only buy what i need, and if something is on offer and i need it i buy a shit load of it, then i dont need to buy it at the normal price for a long long time.

you NEED food.
you DONT NEED expensive microwave meals, football team sized packs of mars bars and store brands finest foods.

I reckon human sperm would be much more than $170 a barrel

So if you can run your car on sperm, you're quids in.

Think you missed the point.

Supermarkets sell stuff at a loss, just to get people through the door. That means that they will sell you the gillete at 70p even tho it cost them 80p to actually get it on the shelf because they will then make 20p profit off you when you buy your bottle of milk at the normal price.
Next week they will have milk on offer and lose 10p on it, but make 20p when you buy the gillete.

If they sold both at the normal price you'd go shop at Asda where they only made 15p profit on both.

Now if EVERYONE went in and only bought the on sale items, they would make 20p loss the first week as you bought 2 gillette's, then 20p loss second week as you bought 2 lots of milk.
The offer only exists because people don't only buy the on offer stuff. If they did, there would be no offers and you'd be in exactly the same boat as all the people throwing stuff in their trolly's randomly at the moment.

You only get away with it because people don't do what you do, and for that you should be fooking grateful.
None of that effects the fact that if stuff becomes more expensive to get there so they only make 10p on the normal price item instead of 20, all you'll find is they offer less offers, so your shopping bill goes up.

actually most stuff i buy is not on offer as its already so cheap, add to that - who the fuck is gonna put offers on a kg of porridge oats? people dont buy that USUALLY so it stays at a stable sub-60p mark.

some of the things that i buy which in general people might buy, do go on offer such as tuna, such as steak mince. in these instances my shopping bills become cheaper each week after. the stuff i buy does not increase in price all the time.

and as i said, if something which i would buy is on offer i buy shit loads of it. so im not going to go back next week and be making a loss somewhere else, because im not buying it normal price again for at least a month or more depending on what it is.

so to make an easy example, i need X and this week its 50p where its usually £1. ill buy 20 lots of X at 50p and that will last 2 months. saving me £10. while in the mean time everything else i buy remains the same price. so my bill has not gone up, its gone down by 50p each week that i do not buy X at the full price.

all im saying is if youre smart about it and dont go aorund like a crazy mother fucker buying everything you see, the price increase is not going to be much of a problem,

If the offer didn't exist then your bill would be higher than it is now so technically it would go up on an average weeks shopping.

If everyone bought 50 of each item everytime it was on offer, supermarkets wouldn't offer it that cheaply, they would lose too much money on it. So the fact you can get away with it relies purely on everyone else being lazy and not following your example.

if the offer wasnt on my bill would be the same as it always was.
im not sure if youre minuderstanding me or what.
buy 10 lots of something at 50p is cheaper than 10 lots at £1. all other items stay the same price. that means over 10 weeks the bill is 50p cheaper each shop because im not buying the item at the usual price.

you can look at it as going in each time and magically the item is half price each time. obviously it will not be, so i bulk buy it at a cheap price and do not buy it again untill ive ran out.

im not talking about your average idiot eating everything in sight, im talking about my personal bill wil be cheaper because ive bought something i need at half the price.

£1.20-£1.30 for a litre of petrol depending on location. Diesel is around 8% dearer.

Think your misunderstanding me.. :D

There's 2 ways of looking at it:

1) There's an offer on, so my bill is less than it should be. If it wasn't, it would be my normal bill.

2) There's an offer on, which means everything else in the shop is more expensive to compensate for it. If I don't buy the item on offer my bill is actually larger than it would be, and if I do, it's the same price as it would of been anyway.

Just depends how you view it.

but number 2 is not correct. using my oatcakes example again as it was only recent, they were down by 50p and everything else i bought cost the same as it always has done. meaning now every week i do not buy oatcakes, im saving 50p off the bill. as every week, everything else i buy costs the same as it did before.

i bought 10 boxes, which saves me £5 over 10 weeks. correct? (assuming i use a box a week).

Here's the bit that your missing. Everything else is costing you 5p more than it should do, because there was 50p off oatcakes 3 weeks ago.

The supermarket sold you 10 packets of oatcakes at a loss. You think they arn't going to get that money back on the other goods you buy?

did you not read what i put

everything ive bought has been the same price each week on my shopping list. therfore my bill is the same, less 50p for oatcakes which i bought in bulk the weeks before.

i buy exactly the same things week in week out (unless like above, i bought something i needed in bulk previously so i dont need it untill it runs out). week in and week out, everything costs exactly the same unless there is a general rise in food prices then ofc a few p is added but that happens every couple of months, not weekly.

i eat the same things, everyday, every week, every month untill i get sick of something and i change it. therfore im buying the same thing every single time im shopping.

Yes i'm reading it.

Everything you've bought has been the same price every week (more expensive than it would be if they didn't have the concept of offers).

You've bought for example milk for 50p every week. If every week they didn't sell something at half price it would cost you 48p for your milk. So instead of saying I saved 50p this week on oatcakes, you could just as easily say.. This week I got ripped off by 2p for my milk.

but if the price has been the same for the past 10 months, then to me that price is the baseline price. and if one item i buy is cheaper one week, and everything else is the same as 10 months ago, how am i losing out?

the baseline price for me is stil the same so keep that in mind. buying offer goods in bulk simply chips a small amount off that baseline price.

15 eggs at 1.50. how much cheaper are you wanthing them exactly? its that price everywhere, even the local farms dont sell them cheaper and they are a local farm not dealing with special offers.

tesco were cheaper at one point than the farm, now they are the same price. so if anything for a long time i was saving on eggs while they were cheaper there than anywhere else.

If you take the baseline none offer price as standard then you fall into my original category 1, which is why you view it as saving money. That's fair enough.

Getting back on topic however lets take the milk example.
You buy your milk for 50p. it costs 40p to produce/package and ship milk to the supermarket.
Now if the price increases to 48p, they can still sell it to you for 50p and make a profit, you see no difference.
If it then increases to 56p to produce you'll be paying 57p+.

Just because your stuff hasn't gone up yet only means you were paying way too much for it in the first place. Don't assume just because it's not gone up in the last 10 months, it's not going to jump in price during the next 10.

it probably will jump in price, i can see that in my egg example.

in the mean time its best to buy it while its cheap imo :)
