I can see the death toll from the initial tsunami being around 80,000 at least then there is the disease which they say will kill roughly the same amount of people....

Not a nice thought, puts life in perpective one minute things are same ol same ol, next mother nature unleashes across 11 countries

What sort of fucked up twisted God would act like this?

The only good thing to come out of religion imo is blasphemy - I mean JESUS H CHRIST how can this be part of a fucking divine purpose? What sort of uncaring, sick, pissed up loser of an omnipotent being could sit and watch this happen? Guess they were all sinners, like the rest of us? Especially the children.

And I also feel sorry for the (potential) loss of your holiday Scouse (unlike some of the posters here - manc). As you lucidly point out there is a difference between personal experience and personal morals. Forum trolls, however (much like tabloid journalists) do not need to draw any such distinction. Hope you get to see the Maldives, if not this time, then next - they are the only place I've ever been that was better than the brochures.

I don't normally use this sort of language but ... how does fuck off sound?

"Act of God" is merely an insurance term for an unforeseen event that is not attributable to anybody. i.e. it's nobody's fault. That said there was a conference just last year that discussed a seismic listening post in the Indian Ocean much like the one at Hawaii monitoring the Pacific. It would not stop these events but it would give about two hours warning to evacuate coastal areas.

The tight bastards said that it wasn't worth it and shelved the plan. Go figure.

Unless you're taking the piss, you're assuming that life is better than death - yet doesn't faith presume that the afterlife is a better place? So God just did them all a favour.

What fucking good would a million pound seismic listening system be to a series of countries / islands without the comms infrastructure to relay the warning, and then the civic organisations to actually make people believe the warning?

Have you ever been abroad? Outside of Europe?

I really couln't give a shit right now if I've offended anyone's religious beliefs, and anyone flaming me on religious grounds is just proving their own slavish stupidity.

And Tom, I don't follow - are you asking me if I'm taking the piss? I think assuming life to be better than death is pretty understandable, as I have no experience of the latter. A bit like assuming that swallowing beer is better than swallowing bleach.

Thats because religion demands that you have faith - faith in your God, and faith in an afterlife.

I'm not a religious person, but I certainly find it easier to believe there is existence after death, and I'm an optimist so I reckon it would be better. The best bit about it is that aetheists can't prove either way.

Yes & yes, so quit with the 'all non-Europeans live in the back of beyond and don't have a clue' shit. The conference last year involved the governments of all the countries affected by the Boxing Day disaster and it was thought that it wasn't worth the investment and cost for something that happens so rarely.

I'm not naive enough to realise that commercial considerations weren't an important part of the decision. But they certainly weren't the only factor, and anyone that thinks they were doesn't have a clue.

And I assumed you were English - sorry for that.

The death toll is now above 70,000 im sorry scouse but i think you need to be a bit less selfish and spare a thought for those people out there who have lost their lives! The mere £2000 that you paid for your holiday is replaceable peoples lives are not! :(

Honestly, if I'd paid what Scouse paid for a holiday, and then realised it was going to be shit, I'd be pissed off too. There would of course be a tinge of regret for the suffering of the locals, but its still 2 grand - how many people who think hes selfish would gladly donate 'a mere' 2 grand, or even 200 quid? Not one of you I reckon. I'm sorry for the people that died, but in all honesty I'm not really all that concerned as I don't know any of them, and there are 6 billion people on this planet, millions of whom have died of various causes, some malicious, some not.

You probably think I'm a heartless bastard, but my first thought when I woke up this morning was to check the weather to see if it was worth going for a drive, not be grief striken at events thousands of miles away that have no direct impact on my life.

People aren't having a go so much as because of their ongoing concern for what is there, more as to why he came on a forum and publically whinged about how angry he was that this event happened just before he was due to visit.

Like you, I'm not all that fussed by it because it doesn't affect me. Sure, if I'd paid £2000 for a holiday and then this happened, I would be annoyed about it but I wouldn't cry on public boards about it. What is seems like is the need for sympathy and attention to be placed on someone because they can't enjoy their holiday like they wanted to, second to the deaths of thousands of people.

And don't use the cash comparison for charity etc for helping out, because Scouse has hardly done the same.

Personally I'd just be very relieved that I hadn't booked my holiday for Christmas time. It's highly unlikely the Foreign Office will sanction travel to that part of the world for holidaymakers so holiday insurance should cover Scouse's losses.

People cry on public boards about stuff _way_ less bad than this.

Yes, I'd be sad and whiny if my holiday was nixed, whether it was due to natural disaster, incomptence and double booking by the travel agent, family member dying unexpectedly, or simply having forgotten the date and missed the plane.

Doesn't mean you can't also be deeply sad for all those people affected by the earthquake. It's a hideous tragedy on a huge scale ;/

I did feel like a voyeur when I was watching the first news reports about it, eating some rubbish we surely didn't need and sitting in a warm and very safe living room on the other side of the world ;/

Not sure if this has been mentioned before on these boards, but one of the recommended places to donate towards this disaster for the UK is http://www.dec.org.uk/. This government organisation then splits up the funds between various organisations such as Oxfam, Safe the Children etc.

If anyone isnt in the UK - http://www.eurogamer.net/article_discussion?article_id=57487

Charities DEC covers - ActionAid, British Red Cross, Cafod, Care International, Christian Aid, Concern, Help the Aged, Merlin, Oxfam, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision.

Just to show I'm not totally heartless, I've just donated 15 quid through that website. I'd donate more but with a bathroom going in I'm not really that flush right now.
