Odd Vista Resolution thingy

I've recently installed the windows vista beta 2 onto a semi-old laptop of mine (P4 2.6GHZ, 512 MB DDR, ATI Radeon Mobility 9000)

Now windoze has given me the lovely screen resolution of 1024x768, so naturally I want to up it a tad. However, and herein lies the crux of the matter, when i increase the resolution, it actually increases the size of the screen so I have to scroll to get to opposite corners.

has anyone seen this before and knows a work-around?

My guess is that Vista only sees you Laptop screen as one with a max resolution of 1024*768. Don't think it's possible to work around this, seeing as it's too risky if your monitor doesn't support it.
Got the same "problem" on windows xp with my laptop aswell, max resolution before the screen just increase the size as you described , is aswell 1024*768.

But if anyone can guarantee that it doesn't fry your laptop monitor increasing the res. with some fancy program, it would be great Just don't think it's possible

looks like a driver issue I had something similar on my mums old laptop with winxp when it ran windows me.

Yup this is because windows only sees your screen as 1024x768 so if you expand your desktop size you need to scroll around the smaller screen size.

Check your monitor/display settings/drivers

damn i was hoping it wasnt something along those lines. The problem is that its windows vista so there arent really very many drivers for it at the moment. ah well will muddle through.
