Obvious scare mongering by the daily mail but..

well a volcanic eruption that size has the potential to wipe out most of the life on earth due to the enormous dust clouds that would block out the sun so... quite a lot :p

it has been rising for nearly a hundred years though (i think?) so not too worried, not much we can do about it either way :(

of course if it blows then i will be pooping my pants but wont worry about it until it happens :)

Its not if it will happen, its when it will happen. We are talking once every few hundred thousand years though, nothing anyone can do about it so no point worrying about it.

Yellowstone Recent Status Report, Updates, and Information Releases

Nice to check in time from time.

If it does blow, it will wipe out most of the US and it will at the very least, turn the place into a dark, very unpleasant palce to live.

Not regarding the impact on movies, games and other such media, and setting aside the aftermath of strategical countries taking advantage of the chaos(north/south korea could explode for example, even STILL the earth atmosphere would be filled with ash, plummeting us most likely to a snappy new ice age, or atleast close to one.

Immigration of survivals, declining of such because other countries can't cope with 'em, food production loss...well, the list goes on.

All in all, if it blows, it'll blow.

On the other hand, post-apocalyptic wasteland to move to and play real life fallout.

It wouldnt surprise me tbh that if it did come to the erupting stage the USA would try all sorts of weird shit to try and stop it :p after all if its going to blow up they have nothing to lose they'll be nuking the fucker and all sorts.

tbh it would be awesome if it did blow. sorry for the loss of life and all, but much awesomeness would ensue. I'll just order my "Speak Mandarin in a week" course now just in case :)

Exactly, it is going to happen eventually and there is nothing we can do about it. More likely we will all be long dead before it goes anyway, plenty of other things have the potential to wipe us out and it is the nature of the universe, species come and go.

Fuck it.

No, literally, fuck it...we need to get some kind of "Handjobs Around The World" Bukkake marathon going and then use the results to permanently seal up the volcano! Nature's wrath is no match for 5000 tons of donated semen!

Now THAT is something worth taking on Dragon's Den!

Seeing and there American, and they knew it was going to happen. The would probably nuke it before it erupted wiping 100% of America out instead!

It wouldnt be so bad - all depends on the type of eruption but the world has endured far worse - wont be a good time to be in the northern hemisphere but it would tackle global warming :p

Learned about this years ago in school, I thought it was commonly held knowledge?

Some cool facts about it though, like if it happened it would cover 2/3 of America in a layer of ash 1 meter deep.

Supervolcanoes are old news - very old news in fact. I think there's 5 or 6 of them around the world. Another case of The Daily Fail though - headline reading: NOTHING HAPPENS, FEAR IT! FEAR IT!

There was a proggy on BBC1 about this a few years ago.
Supervolcano (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That was kind of cheesy the BBC one. The discovery channel one was better. Some horrid facts from articles and papers on them:

  • If wind patterns don't change, an explosion of that magnitude (well off the VEI scale) could drop most temperatures on earth by anything from 15-20 degrees in a few weeks. Goodbye crops and vital energy giving sunlight.
  • Genetic mapping showed (from what we know) that as much as 90% of human decendents died in it.
  • It has been summised that many creatures were killed by litterally drowning in their own blood as tiny shards of pulverised rock cut up their lungs from the inside.
  • Cores have showed a covering of 30cm as far as 4,000 miles away from the last blast.
What a lovely happy topic! Interesting nonetheless.

With these big natural disasters it seems America will get the brunt of them. Huge volcano? Yellowstone will blow them off the face of the earth.

Then there is that mega tsunami which could happen over in Canary Islands, which could do some significant damage to the eastern coastlines,

I'm somewhat fascinated by supervolcanoes though, its something we're likely never to experience in our lifetime, though if i recall, the last time something like that happened was during the mount st helens eruption when the ash went everywhere.

There are some seriously large volcanoes all over the place, it's a reminder that the Earth isn't just a lump of cold rock.

gotta have some respect for volcanos I guess :) after all they have shaped the planet via eruptions over millions of years.

theres a big one in Iceland that would make ejajafakjul (or whatever) look like a wet fart, and a huge one in eastern russia comparable to yellowstone, dont know many others (probably a few in pacific i imagine though and some underwater ones!)
