If I capitalised the B maybe the title would have made more sense, but I think after reading you'll get the idea:

In totally unsurprising news, dirty cock Obama "extends offshore drilling moratorium" for six whole months, probably before making big noises about "safety" upon the return to business as usual.

So, Obama showing his true colours. I honestly feel ashamed for voting in our elections, considering pretty much everything's a stitch-up

Is "politicians lie" now something surprising ;)

Anyway, what did you want to happen? Drilling stop completely?

Its kinda silly in that they are so reliant on Oil that to stop drilling just makes em more reliant on oil imports.

And the throwaway talk of moving away from reliance on oil is also silly - theres no viable alternatives.

Well they have to make em viable, when it comes to energy production:

well they have around 40 to 50 years to figure it out before they run out, thats assuming the figures have not been "overstated" again.

around 60 years of gas remaining.

Coal however could last up to around 1500 years!

But oil is so crucial in everything that there are big problems ahead no matter what :(

Well i don't believe that really. Some things might change, but it's not like it's the end of the world.

You may not know, but offshore drilling around the US has been banned for a long long time. First Bush broke a treaty signed in 1974 by opening up huge swathes of Alaska for the oil companies and now his black namesake has done the same just off the coast.

Democracy in action if you ask me :(

As for yours and rynnor's comments on not being worried about the oil running out - LOL! nice one!

Well, they do have the ability to unban what they do around their own country, unless it's an international treaty. If it was banned, how come they had a drilling operation there anyway? :eek6:

I'm just not worried, simple as that. It could very well run out, it could run out tomorrow, but it wouldn't change the fact that humanity would very well survive and oil is not the end all of resources.

The sooner the better for Oil to run out....then perhaps we can get some new technology in place instead...and not be at the mercy of oil producing countries.

It will never run out - but alternatives will not arise until the price of oil increases considerably.

I dont believe you can switch to something else till the rest of the world does - if the US tried it it would doom their industries to be even less competitive than they are now.

What? You've got a magic fucking oil bean or something? :eek7:

It wont run out because it will become too expensive to use - all the currently expensive alternatives will become viable.

No-ones going to use a more expensive type of fuel over a cheaper one - its the same reason why you cant give up using oil yet.

He's right, but the amount easily available will decrease enough such that it becomes hugely expensive (1000x the price now, or more). We'll never pump it all out, economics will see to that.

That's only because the true price of oil to the US economy isn't fully costed; cost in the need to fund a military machine to control supply and oil is a lot more expensive. The 2.4 trillion dollars they expect to spend in middle east by 2017 could have paid for a buttload of nuclear power stations (240 to 300 of them).

I'm not sure theres much point to such a question - we can never determine the true cost of anything because its impossible to know all the effects of any decision.

Without oil there would be no US Economy so debating the cost of it is moot.

We don't just use oil for fuel. What about the myriad other uses we put it to?

The biggest other use is for plastics - as it gets more expensive it will be replaced by other materials where possible whilst the un-substitutable uses will get more expensive.
