I was looking for another RPG game and I found this PC game called Oblivion.

Thought OK lets try it.

Took it home, installed it and then started to play it, first impression was OK this could be good... 2 hours into it I thought omg how good is this game... more time on it and i was hooked.

Fantastic game/graphics/gameplay...

Anyone else played this and what are your thoughts?

Amphrax/Arauddry

P.S.

If you have not got this game imo buy it, its great...

Played it and it was great at start, but just lost interest after a while.

Its good apart from one thing:

The Monsters level with you. You are always able to beat them. There is no uber Monsters...which could give you real problems and the items level with you and the mobs aswell so there wont be TEH uber item somewhere. It gets boring after a while. No real Danger (apart from increasing the difficulty) etc

Prolly the Reason why it is boring after a while.

But there are some Mods out there who disable the level scaling and make it like Morrowind more or less.

I haven't really bought a new computer game since I started DAoC four years ago. :( Well, Half-Life 2 as a gift and its new episodes, but not much more beyond that.

This mod fixes the level problem and many other things.

The mobs still scale with you though. I never liked that. On a single player RPG the one thing it has going for is that you can eventually become virtually a God and annihilate everything with impunity.

They take that one thing away. :(

Still, overall a fantastic game but waaaay too easy in the end. Especially once you get Azura's Star and keep it :) Soul Trap Proc + Black Soul Gem + Crafted Item + Azura's Star = Endless Power.

There's some fantastic mods out there for it. If I could go back in time I'd mod the hell out of the game before I started it as the Bank Mod, amongst several others like the Wizards Redoubt. :) My advice is check all the mods out and get some of the more popular ones from the offical site's forums

if they had designed the world so that there were nasty areas in one part, big dungeons over here, easier dungeons over there etc. it'd be a fantastic game (with a bit of a UI problem but that's fairly simple to fix).

Unfortunately if you go into weenie goblin cave at level 2 you meet weenie goblins, if you go back at level 20 you get goblin psycho killers.

If you go through the oblivion gates to hell at level 20 you meet spider daedra, elementals, seriously nasty monsters. If you go through at level 2 you get to whack some stunted scamps... somehow the "invasion of stunted scamps" doesn't seem that impressive.

Now combine this with a levelling system that works off of skills - every time you get 10 points in your primary skills you gain a level... so if you have primary skills of:

sneak
lockpicking
athletics
acrobatics

say, and run around picking locks, hiding and jumping you'll gain levels...

You'll be no stronger in combat but suddenly instead of weenie goblins you'll be fighting goblin psycho killers - fear not! sneak them to death....

Or on the same line, never ever touch those skills but level up your spellcasting and fighting secondary skills and be a completely unkillable level 1 character ;)

What Flim said :)

It´s a good game, but horribly flawed in terms of gamedesign. I haven´t seen a design catastrophe like this since Black&White.

In addition to everything that´s been said already, they also failed to follow the most simple rule of gamedesign: if something is happening ingame, the player needs to get feedback!

There is no feedback at all if you catch an illness, or
if you´re morphing into a Vampire
except that your stats have changed. So basically after each fight, you need to actively check your stats to find out if you´re ok.

Oblivion is a good game, I enjoyed it quite some time. But those design flaws are annoying as hell (and very instructive at the same time).

What, aside from the feedback displayed across the top of the screen saying you have contracted Polymorphic hermawhatchamacallit or any other type of disease? Once you see that pop up in a fight, you might have a look at you character & try and work out what it actually did ;) Of course if you ignore it....

Anyway, Oblivion's great. A lovely game. The trouble is ourselves as players. Once you know how the levelling system works, and the scaling of enemies, it's easy to develop an ub0r character than can walk across everything the world throws at you.

Of course, there's the difficulty slider for self regulation, but that's also too easy to abuse :)

Very cool game, and you can keep going on forever as long as the community keeps making mods. And lots of the content mods being made are really professional.

um.
it says you have contracted 'blablabla blablablalia'. it shows under 'current effects' in the spells list.
honestly, i dont really see whats peoples problem with the interface. i think its not bad - after all, its not designed for use with mouse+keyboard (but works quite fine still) and it has all the information you need. if you want a bad interface, try tony hawk's american wasteland.

edit: fuck me left the page open and didnt refresh before posting so i missed the previous posts on the topic :p

I always imagined that 1 or 2 month more development time would have made oblivion the perfect game but somehow they had to make money so they released it with all those stupid gameplay workarounds

The problem is, that you don´t know what "polymorphic youknowwhat" is and that you have to react to it (if you don´t want .. you know :)). So at least an entry in the journal would have been a good idea. But even if you check your char, you just see a reduced CON and the name in the current effects. There´s no more information except that. What is it? What can I do to counter it? It might be realistic, but then, it´s also realistic to walk around and just die from a heart attack. :)
Did you read the waves of complains in the Oblivion forums shortly after release? Tons of players were complaining about exactly the problem I mentioned. Now of course you can say: "ha! their fault, stupid user errors" but that doesn´t make the point less important. If a huge number of players don´t get it, there´s something wrong with the communication.

And fl3a, the interface was a mess. Invisible quickbars, unintuitive buttons, a font that was WAY too large for the UI window (so they had to use abbreviations for the items). It was clearly made for console systems and although it somehow worked, it only started to be remotely decent after the first community(!) patch, which is a slap in the face for a game company. A little rework before release surely wouldn´t have hurt.

going to a shrine cures all negative effects that dont require a quest to cure. so do potions of cure poison/cure disease. i believe even the tips on loading screens show tips about going to shrines and what different diseases mean. i know for fact that it says something along the lines of 'porphyric hemophilia is commonly known as the vampire's disease'.
all i can say is, i never had any problems with it and dont see what the problems are about :p

what you said about tons of players complaining about the same thing is imo the players fault - if everything isnt as linear as taking a shit in a public toilet and solutions to their problems arent presented on every corner (even though you CAN ask pretty much everyone about a cure for vampirism for example) the developer has made a shit game with a bad interface. ok, as ive said, its not the best, but its certainly not as broken as people want it to be.

i play it too and made a vid about it ^^ (only part 1 tho, will have to start with part 2 once :/)

nice game but i found the gameplay of the older games better tbh, altho casting when wearing your weapon is a huge improvement ^^ some things are better/some things r worse then the previous games(morrowind etc etc) altho the graphics are a huuuuuge improvement, all in all i love that game :)

yeh and what icebreaker said, altho some mods can fix that i think

It's great fun except some skill's are next too useless some very buggy quests also, best thing about it is the endless amounts of mods always some fun too be had.

Gets pretty old once eveything is completed tho, and agree with the poster that said there is no real danger anywhere.

I kinda liked the levelscaling, kept the game challenging and not just 'clear 1 million easy trashmobs to kill 1 challenging boss' like all other RPG's are.

Overall the game is great fun for a few days/weeks but then you kinda just loose intrest for no apparent reason.

edit: It's worth buying this game for the Assasin Guild quests alone by the way, brilliant story and great characters.

Never really cared for the oblivions or elder scrolls...it's like...well...masturbating.

RPG isn't that fun alone.

love the game, but gonna try out this mod thing that was posted. seems to improve a lot about why the game was not as good as it should have been. Its a shame i cant run the amazing graphics setting on my laptop, but it still looks awesome, and sometimes i switch to high rezz, high everything in some areas :)

its kind of hard to figure assassins are members of the thieves guild, since you arent allowed to kill people on thieves guild missions

Btw, if ure a stealthy class but gonna play a good guy, kill some beggar at night or some random where u wont get caught, then when Lucien LaChance turns up when u sleep, kick his ass.

Sure u wont be able to do the dark brotherhood missions but his Cloak and Hood have ridiculous bonus stats :)

For the good guys only tho xD

Alternativly heres another amusing thing, if your a caster, get illusion magic as a path and go to the spell shop in the imperial city, shuld be a spell in there, i forget its name but it basicly makes people go into a kind of fury mode when u touch them (lvl 18 and below which apart from the guards, 90% of the citizens are). Then they go round attacking each other, the guards kill em, and u can rob all thier stuff and house keys off em lol. Oh and when one of the guards cops it their imperial armour kicks ass and sells well, afaik u cant kill important NPCs anyway like Thurwen, they just get knocked unconcious. Is a bit pointless but fun to slaughter an entire city and not get accused for it :)

just murder everyone then sleep and become a paid assasin, such a fun quest line with some pretty decent and cool looking items to be had :)
