ok so a few too many word shortenings in the title but it really explains how i felt when i heard this

in the uk some councils are banning the word christmas when they put up lights decorations etc in december because it might offend some non christian people living here, they are going to be winter celebration decorations or some crap, now is it just me or is this taking things a tad too far?

im not a christian but i do celebrate christmas, and as much as some people want to deny it the uk is actually a christian country, christmas is a tradition so old it seems (to me) horrendous to ban the word its part of OUR culture fgs, and a lot of small shops run by asian/arabic people do sell christmas cards etc.

This is just a theory of mine but it seems to me the councils that do this sort of thing should be done for inciting racial hatered themselves because when i hear that they are banning christmas it makes me feel resentful towards THEM, not the muslims or sieks (eep sp?) or anyone else, its just my thought but by doing things like this the media and the government are making people more hateful towards the people that are said to be offended by it, if i was in a muslim country i wouldnt feel offended by them celebrating their cultral traditions (unless one of them was to impale small red heads on sticks and throw marsh mallows at them, that might make me a bit uneasy tbh).

Christmas, as it currently is celebrated ain't older then the roman empire, and not even the start of the roman empire. Don't know exactly how long however, christmas, or rather the celebration used to be a pagan celebration of many many cultures because the days starten to lengthen again from December 22'nd on. Summer and Winter solstices etc.
That's where the lights come from. On the darkest day of the year, to light candles to make it a bit brighter etc (more to it in the ancient believes, but cba writing that all up. Search wikipedia if you wanna know)

nah.. it changed it a bit, but didn't start it.... like I said, before it was christmas, the celebrations were there aswell, as solstice celebrations.. return of the sun etc. and that goes back WÁY further then 2000 years...

as far as i know christmas is celebrated allmost all the countryes in the world.
this celebration has gone out of its religous grounds. most ppl dont even go to church (like me) at christmas and they dont really give a damn about it. its just a great excuse to give and get presents.

That´s by far the most ridiculous thing I`ve heard in a while. Denying your own cultural background and roots to avoid stepping on the toes of those people with a different cultural background? That accomplishes what exactly?
We´re celebrating the birthday of a guy that happened to be born some odd 2000 years ago.. sorry, that´s the fact and the facts won´t go away if you´re trying to cover them behind euphemisms.

However, a friend of mine is living in NYC and apparently, it´s common courtesy to NOT say Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year over there (for exactly that reason.. too many other cultures living there, chances of accidentally stepping on someone´s toes).

In Eastern Germany, which was unter communist reign since the end of WW2, all kinds of religious references and aspects were banned as well. They were officially celebrating "Year End" (Jahresendfeier)... and they even took it a step further. A christmastree-angel wasn´t officially a christmastree-angel, but "Year-End-winged-doll" (Jahresend-Fkügelfigur) instead.

If you move to a country you have to learn to adapt, if you dont want to then you at least have to understand the country works how it has for years.

in 10 years you wont have any alchohol as muslims cant drink, all meat will have to be killed in whatever way the jewish people do, also you cant have any events incase someone is offended.

I see it like this, you move to a country and you learn to live with how things work, if you were born here then you still have to understand that the country works in a particular way....no one forces anyone to stay in England.

(compensation for WHAT?)

they complained their mansion wasnt big enough.
