looking to upgrade from a GF2, do I go down the ATI route, or get a GF3/4 ?

I'm told the ATI cards will give a superior image quality, but a lower fps - which i don't mind, as i'd rather 60fps with something looking lovely than 999 with it looking any 'lesser'.

Btw, the comp's an xp1600 / 256mb ddr...

GF3

If you're thinking of an Ati Radeon, they give slightly worse image quality to gain speed (although they're not as fast as the GF3 afaik).

This applies in Q3, dunno about the games you're looking to play though?

RTCW at the moment, and of course probably the next 'big' fps games, unreal 2 etc.

This GF2 seems to handle all the d3d stuff fine, max payne etc.

Then the above would apply, q3 engine and what have you.

I'd spend money on a decent processor before buying a new graphics card, tbh.

voodoo 3's are always the way to go, little bit of tweaking and i get 80 fps in q2! pity q3 flails widly at ~50 fps despite having toned graphics down severely.. damn pc :\

P2-350!!

Although I have added a gf2 and 512MB of ram, it's still shit. Fine for CS and Q2 though, which are the only games I've played for the last year (very rarely).

damn, i lose by all of 16mhz :)

Celeron 366, 128mb ram (just gone up from 64mb, thank fuck) and using a v3.... also finally bought a new hd, a nice seagate baracuda 40 gig, which is a nice change from my 6 gig pile of shit :))

Q2 and CS both run fine on my PC with a bit of tweaking, anything more and it just collapses. I tried installing the MoH demo awhile ago, and that would barely install, let alone run :/

With your system specs, I would wait for the GF4 to come out then buy a GF3 Ti 500 for not much money. My mate has one and runs RtCW at 1600x1200 32bit with ridiculous fps.

I had to chip in at some point :)

If you want better 2D and 3D Image Quality, better features and a cheaper card, go with the Radeon 8500/8500LE.

If you want more fps and ever so slightly better compatibility, go for a Ti500. Having said that I can;t think of any game which doesn;t run well on an 8500.

Simple innit.

Wow, I'm almost in agreement with Bodhi. Only a couple of things to add. The Leadtek GF3 Ti500 is noted for it's very high quality 2D, similar to the Radeon, though it doesn't drive two monitors quite as well as the Radeon, or have the famed DVD playback. If I was upgrading now, it would be a tough choice, though the "bang for your buck" factor would probably swing it towards the Radeon as it stands. Once the GF4 is more available, prices will change. I'd wait if you can.:D
