Number dyslexia?!

Has anyone had this or know what its like? I dont have any problems with words, i can read fine and can speel write as well, but the past 2 months i would say, i have been having a problem "reading" numbers.

In the line of work i do, i have to work with numbers, some cases mathematically [which im shit at anyway] and in other cases simple things like taking payments etc.

When i repeat back a card number for instance, or a mobile number, the numbers end up getting jumbled in a sense and they seem all over the place, and so it doesnt "make sense" when i read them, or say them out loud. It just ends up confusing me.

I had no idea dyslexia could affect number reading though, i only ever seen one case - which suprise suprise, was part of Quantum Leap [<3] when it was the first episode/s of the guy with Downs Syndrome.

Didnt think much of it, but nowadays its getting worse and worse. My eyesight is failing on a whole, coming into work today [Bright day] i tried reading something on the wall, and it took ages for my eyes to adjust to the new lighting, and i had to get really close to look at quite large writing.

Scared the fuck out of me, but the number thing is concerning me slightly more, as its something that is really new'ish... and i hate eye tests! Glasses suck

Yes, i've seen some documentaries on this subject and there are cases of that and something called Visual Dyslexia where the words appear jumbled on the paper.

I think I read something in the papers about some girl who had visual dyslexia and was sorted by wearing pink tinted sunglasses or something.

But Numerical Dyslexia does exist, maybe you should see a Doctor about possible ways to help this.

I would think it would be very unusual to spontaneously develop dyslexia later on in life. I have the issues with reading numbers (pity the poor person at the supermarket who came to me with lots of items that needed the barcode manually typed in) and reading off white paper is much harder in a brightly lit room because of the contrast, but that's always been with me. I just didn't realise before that not every body else had the same issues

I would get your eyes tested and get some more rest before you start worrying about dyslexia. It's probably something you're over analysing and thinking about now, which puts a lot of stress on the subject, and then you're more likely to fluff it up. If that doesn't solve it, then you should speak to your doctor if you're still concerned.

The nurse sat next to me says that looking through Green or Red plastic *may* help the condition. You need to seek further help on the subject, probably from a learning psychologist. A doctor may or may not refer you to one because not all doctors believe that the viewing things through different colour plastics has any effect.

The needing of glasses is a seperate issue which you also need to confront.

hmm. tbh I sometimes swap certain numbers in a sequence of numbers around. given the fact that in my line of work I tend to read/input huge amounts of numbers this sometimes causes me to make mistakes from time to time.
impo, it's because I tend to have to do things very quickly, and therefor the old grey matter messes up every now and then.

example: I'd read 0123456789 as [highlight]0123465789[/highlight]

Grey, I'd not be too worried about your eyes adjusting from bright to dark and reverse situations. In some cases the switch your eyes make can take some time. Tbh if it worries you I'd say get a decent pair of sunglasses from an optician.

Eyetests are imo something everyone should do every now and then anyway. There's nothing wrong with glasses or contacts. I took one myself a few years ago when it dawned on me that I had to walk really close to train notices in stations before I could read them and that while I was driving I could only read roadsigns at the last minute. I considered that both an irritation and dangerous so I got myself tested (it's free, or at least free here in holland) and turned out I had something like -1.5/-1.75, just enough to make my ranged vision be blurry.

Once kitted out with glasses I was dead pleased, most of all because I discovered that watching films in a cinema was like a whole new thing Tbh I did have to get used to them a bit: I had a slight feeling that I was falling forwards due to my eyes becoming adjusted to the fact that they no-longer had to strain to see as best as they could. That's all gone now though. In fact I'm thinking of having my eyes lasered for the semi-permanent correction it offers but I'm a bit feart. It's not really the cost savings of lasering either, because my insurance allows me to buy a new pair of glasses (any make/brand/optician/whatever) every three years for free, and the opticians often do a free pair of sunglasses to entice the buyers in.

ive had that for as long as i can remember, if its more than 7 i usually have to count them out to be sure.

You learn to look at each digit rather than the whole number when you're presented with large numbers, thats what I do anyway. I don't see nine million eight thousand four hundred and 51, i see 9, 0, 0, 8, 4, 5, 1

edit: the zero thing, i dont think it's that uncommon since it's why people put commas in big numbers right? ie: 1,000,000 <-- so you can easily see it's a million as oposed to 1000000

sounds obvious but try splitting the numbers into chunks, though i'd assume you do that anyway...

I sometimes replace a word with something complete different and totally not related to the word I intended to type without even noticing.
Really annoying to have to re-read every sentence because there could be word in it I was not even thinking about….

i do this too. usualy when im thinking of more than one subject at the same time. the one at the 'back' of my mind sometimes slips out and i type a word.
