ntl prolly have their dns server running on a 286.

That ip's a business server so therefore doesnt get any traffic after 6pm.
I have done this before and it worked a treat, but I can't remember how to do it, a little help please.

network conections and settings (?)->your internet connection (whatever it is called)->right-click->properties->tcp-ip->properties. It should be the bottom half of the window.

25 November 2003 16:32 DNS - affecting all internet packages
Due to a major server outage, ntl:home internet customers on all packages may currently be experiencing problems with ALL internet access, including web browsing, email, ftp and newsgroups.

Our engineers are currently investigating and hope to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Please note that due to the nature of this outage our technical support lines are much busier than normal, resulting in long wait times on all lines. If you suspect this issue affects you, please check this page or the ntlworld server status line on 0800 052 4315 for updates

We just got an email at work, might be related in some way??
URGENT - PLEASE CASCADE THIS NOTICE TO ALL EMPLOYEES AT YOUR SITE.

Europe - USA network connectivity problem

Yesterday, at around 4 pm UK time, one of the major international cables was severed in the North Atlantic, resulting in severe loss of capacity for US / Europe telecommunications traffic, both voice and data.

The impact is wide spread both for internal and external services connecting to / from the US, as all major carriers AT&T, MCI, Sprint etc., are all affected.

For ConocoPhillips internal telecommunications traffic we are currently using back up circuits, but these are of limited capacity and response times are poor. Therefore, we need to take actions to re-prioritise and reduce our capacity needs during this period of disruption and need your co-operation.

Wherever possible, please refrain from sending Internet emails and internal emails containing attachments (other than for recipients at your local site) for the duration of this situation.

We are in touch with our major carriers and are aware that actions are being taken to address the problem. However, we do not have an official timeframe for correction at this time. We will issue further information when it is available to us.

Oh well Wilier, you shot back up my "how clever is Wilier really?" table. Got a bit scary back there, but you came through unscathed. :)

Working for a hosting company, this hit us badly.

Turns out it was down to ZoneLabs.

Every 30 mins or so, Zonelabs hits it's DNS server to make sure all is ok. If it doesn't get a responce, it starts a ping every 2 seconds.

When the cable went down, ZoneLabs had a fit, and basically caused a DOS, which caused most of the web to fall over in Europe, due to the pings trying to find different routes.

Thats what I heard anyway...

True or False... who cares!!

UPDATE: Europe - USA Data Network Problem

As of early this morning, normal transatlantic data communications are restored.

Strenuous efforts from several parties overnight have resulted in CoP network traffic between Europe and North America being temporarily re-routed, allowing the carrier to repair the broken cable. Full network bandwidth is available on the temporary route, and all services should be available.

If you are still experiencing access or performance problems, please contact the Helpdesk.

Although this situation was beyond our ability to influence, GIS regrets the disruption and will be working with the network carrier companies to ensure that improved measures are put in place to mitigate against the possibility of a similarly unlikely event in the future.
