Well I get 688kbs / 84.3kbytes/sec on speed test, and in main i am happy with service in Nottm.

But recently I seem to be dropping out of CS servers, particularly when the map changes.

Also my ping was 30-50 but for last few months it is around 70-80.

Has anyone else had these probs with connection dropping (only really happens when maps change):p

Ive had NTL since around january and yeah these probs do occur a bit but i get better connections to servers in the uk than uk guys themselves from across the pond here in ireland most of the time so i like NTL lots:)

I've always read huge number of complaints in the ntl.* newsgroups but ever since signing up for ntlworld dialup I've never had a major problem. The cablemodem I got in January hasn't only been down for probably 8 or 9 hours in that time

I've seen d/l speeds of 89k/s and pings often hover down 30-60

No complaints, although I would like a recordable HardDrive on my ntl:digital box :)

Im nottingham ntl cable, ive only had this happen to me once. But then it dropped everyone but one person. BW has had a few problems recently. They are being fixed.

had ntl cable since start of january this year, and have had a fairbit of downtime, and my routing has been dodgy for at least the past six months, with packets going up and down the country for no reason at all, which results in 60-80 pings on BW servers. But to be honest, i can't really complain about it.

TV and telephone however, is a very different story!

No matter what problems people get with NTL there is never going to be any problem with me, by saying that they are better than BTo. BTo was the only choice available for me at the time of wanting broadband (Why do people call it this? Its shit slow by todays standards, broadband to me means FAST, and 60k/s is not FAST. Also broadband is a term relating to the frequency range of the line and not the capacity, but thats another issue. Fucking americans with their terminology.) and cable modems were not in the area due to us not having digital cable.

The service I've got has been alright from bto for downloading files but for just about every other aspect of the internet, games, news, p2p applications etc, it has been utter utter shite. Note : Includes being lied to 3 times by bto saying they were not imposing speed restrictions, and 12 weeks later finding out they indeed were. And then there the times where the line has failed or been cut off with no prior warning.

All you with cable do not moan at a 60-80 ping to game servers when the other day I was getting a lovely "above modem ping" of 150 - 280 to jolt UT servers with 10% pl, and no I wasnt downloading or using the line in anyway apart from the game. It is great knowing the money you pay each month just goes on admin costs that ship more users onto the service until it grinds to a halt...

Download speeds have been quite poor recently too. So whats the moral of this story? Dont buy bto unless you use it for anything more than er... lets see what doesnt fuck up all that often... ah yeah email. Email is obviously the MOST important part of the internet according to programs like watchdog, because the only suitable thing they can seem to find for their show is "Blah blah mr J Jones couldnt read his email one evening".

Dunno why just really really annoys me that they are so blind to exactly what is going on around them. Or the image that putting out accurate and slightly technical information is somehow naughty. Fuck people who do not understand what the terminology is, do you go round speaking like a child around adults with kids in a public place because you fear the kids might not understand what you are saying? Also people who are not up on the technical side most likely do not have any interest in the current issue what so ever anyway, so why lower yourself to cater for the people who dont care?

I'm never going to buy services from this company again after how much they have fucked me around, when this contract runs out it will be time for NTL cable.

Woah quite a rant there, I must have been bored.

Dime every one knew BTO was shit so your service was expected but people had higher expectations from NTL ;)

Just glad BY doesn't seem to have any real problems.

NTL has been fine for me for 18 months. Yes, the odd glitch, but hey - this is a NATIONAL network, of monumental proportions and as such, is bound to have problems occasionally.

I understand that the Cambs (covers anglia) region has been one of the better ones, and to be honest, that's all I care about. Sure, we had a few problems with the DHCP server for a few weeks, and yes I became angry - but as I said, I work(ed) within IT & networking, and I have the nouse to realise "shit happens"

Any one with half a brain realises shit happens but the amount of moaning I've seen on these forums alone about NTL is a little bit much. Then again its only shit if it happens to you and if it happens to some one else, well who cares :p

Although I agree with Dime....least its not BTO ;)

What you have to remember mate is that people only complain when shit happens to them. You don't see them ranting and pimping when it's working fine.

My point is that by starting at the ntl.* group hierarchy you are only gonna see people complaining. These people are a miniscule proportion of the entire NTL broadband collective

It would be like trying to rate a companies product performance - by looking at their complaints department. You need to see both sides of the argument, and hence doing the aforementioned would not be an unbiased and fair evaluation.

The VAST majority of cable users think it's the fucking bees knees. A few whinging cunts (albeit with legitimate complaints, shame they embelish and rant it so overly) does not suffice as a fair measure of the service

Very true and its something I've always said myself....although I did try to buck the tread by starting a thread about how great CM was although you tend to get the people with a shit service take it over :)

Ooer a little test http://forums.barrysworld.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14212 ;)

it's not neccesarily the price, quality of service etc that bothers me in particular. it's how fucking useless they are at customer support, tech support and managing to send the right technician out to do the right job at the right time on the right fucking day! countless times, someone from ntl have rolled up in their van, knocked on the door, been shown the problem and uttered something along the lines of "sorry, can't do that, i work on the tv/phone/cm/digging holes in roads [delete as applicable] side of things", and drove off five minutes later and charging us anything from £25 to £50 for the pleasure.

and i thought BT were bad...

I have to agree, if someone doesnt understand they say 'We'll just put you through to level 2 support.', only for them to pass you on. If you raise your voice you will eventually get someone to sort the problem. Smaller sized companies arnt too bad but major ones such as NTL you will find these kinds of problems. RM being my most hated for one problem which could have been fixed within an hour if they listened to me the first time.

lol Mankatron ! Exactly same shit happened with my NTL install - except they made me lay the cable my self though the loft, and insisted I drilled all the holes in my house :) - What the hell did they do I hear you say - err they provided me with their tools ! and decided to leave a few handy items as they left - so in the end I got payment in kind for my labour.
Smeg's second hand powertool shop soon to be online.....

when i got cable put into my room, the bloke drilled straight through my window frame, despite our agreement for him to put it just above the skirting board, and didn't put the isolator into a box on the wall. now, that's a half-arsed job if i ever did see one!

Anyway guys - thanx for the feedback - I didn't want to start a flame war on DSL/Cable - I just wanted to know if any NTL users had experienced similar (minor) probs to me.
I am sure the longer BT shaft everyone with DSL the likes of NTL/BY will continue to expand their geography.

I had one problem where when I first got my NTL CM, it ran like a normal 56k. Everything was 5k a second, although my ping was ok. Took me ages to figure out, apparently I had to reboot my cable modem for it to take effect. But if so why was it working??

NTL didnt have a clue what to do and I have still not recieved an EMail from them about a possible solution.

It was your fault, your modem used "unsubscribed.cm" (which is the copper 64k cable service, not the 512k silver.cm service)

You didn'ty register and follow the instructions properly

Why my fault, the engi installed and it was slow. After a reboot of the CM it worked! Nothing to do with subscription.

does it come with instructions?

i mean how is a customer supposed to know how to install it?

i wouldnt as i dont know much about broadband stuff... yet...

They wire it up, but not to your cpu

Make sure u get a NIC card installed. Better to have one there b4 he comes. Of course this is if you are not going to be using the USB on it. Most people prefer to use the ethernet port on it. Its pretty much the same as a normal modem and you wont need instructions.

O

Killa - is there any performance difference on USB compared to Card?
I use USB - and it seems great - but is it better on ethernet?

doesnt the USB usage use cpu time?

would be ok on fast computers, but some slow ones might not be as good...
