After some amount of buggering about with my pc , as mentioned in another post, I decided the other day to reinstall XP Home.
This I did, after a full format of C. The reinstall all went smoothly, and I went through the driver reinstall too.
What I noticed though, was that when I installed my Cats the control panel had remembered my settings , i.e 1024-768 desktop resolution, at 85 hz refresh rate. Also, when I reconnected my router, it connected to the internet immediately. Odd I thought, and put in the IP address required for the login form. The form came up, with my details already entered.
Which leads me to this question chums, does a video card and a router have some kind of independant bios of its own ? I can only assume so as the rest of my pc is as blank as can be !
Also, can you believe this, after all the re-install and everything, I was playing Desert Combat last night and I STILL experienced the lag-like computer stopping for a second on one occasion !

Just for the record, my computer spec is as follows -
Athlon XP3000+
Aopen AK79D -400 Max Motherboard
1024 pc2700 ram.
Radeon 9800pro
Netgear DG814 ADSL router.

Temp is solid at low 40's, nothing is overclocked. At the moment all there is installed is
BF1942 + expansion packs, patched to latest
Desert combat for above
Call Of Duty , patched
All Seeing Eye
Latest version of IRC
Get right (free version).
There is nothing else on the computer I can think of , and its a fresh install of XP home only 2 days old !

Any opinions on this subject would be much appreciated :)

XP will always try and start up with a res of 1024x768 at a refresh greater than 70Hz, which explains your display. As to your router, yes, it has a firmware and bullt in memory to handle the connectivity side of things and provides your PC its IP over DHCP, so once you installed network drivers (or if XP supported them natively) you'd be ready to rock and roll...

Not make sure you're all patched up to MSBlaster and the like ;)

So how did it know it I wanted a refresh of 85hz ? XP defaults to 60 I always thought ?
Ahh I got you ref the router, I assumed it must be something like that, or magic .... :)
Im beginning to wonder now wether my lag-like problem actually IS lag now, as the router now seems to be standing out as the only unchanged thing on my pc ... Thing is it can do it when Im not even playing a game, you know, the cursor can just stop for a second or two, however I suppose what with broadband and a router its still connected to the internet, even though Im not in a game.
Many thanks for the swift reply btw Xav :)

Correct me if I'm wrong - it's been a while since I used it - but isn't the free version of getright adware? Does it sit in the systray constantly? If so the lag may be the periodic updating of ads to display in getright.

Getright is 'teh evul' yes, personally if I'm going to use a download manager with IE I'd use reget (www.reget.com) but for the most part the built in download manager of Firefox is 'teh win' for my needs.

I'm beginning to wonder if you've got some kind of resource sharing issue, fire up the device manager (My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager) and view 'Resources by Type' - let us know if any of your hardware is sharing an IRQ with other devices, a fix might mean shifting a PCI card or three.

Are you running SP1A now with all the fixes? And the latest drivers for your chipset/storage etc?

No not sp1 or anything yet, not had time, but will do in the next day or two. Anyway it was doing this before the reinstall, and it had sp1 etc then.
Ill check what you've said when I get home, and in the meantime Ill delete GetRight and see if it makes a difference. I do recall when I installed it , it said there was no spyware or anything involved in it tho, however we all know how much that might be worth :)

GetRight is not 'teh evul'. The old versions of it had adware, but now it doesn't.
