Now, to sound dumb and probably very naive, it looks very nice and its pretty cool..but I can't see the point to it? what would you do with it once you have built it? I mean will that thing run doom3 and the such any faster than say an athlon64 3400+ ?

Well you build this stuff, first and formost becuase you can.
As for playing doom 3, it wouldnt even run on it :)
these things are only usefull for certain verry cpu intense calculations.
This stuff could be used to render stuff, bruteforce encryption, run simulations and ofcourse it would be a verry good tool to learn about clusters, for admins and developers.

not for games heh, I can imagine the average educational facility being well pleased to have one for students to play with. Also your smaller business could now use the number crunching ability that is offered while enjoying the smaller budget requirements.

you see, if you stick say 24 PIV pootas together you're going to start to have to meet some conditions re cooling and power, not to mention costs.
it seems that 6 of those via things = 4 2.4ghz pVIs so you can do the math. they use less cooling and consume far less power than a similar array of big pootas would, so you get more bang for your buck.

and buck banging...is where it's at, cat :)
