Now I understand...

.. why almost no online sites accept Visa Electron cards... it's not because of "security" or anything like that, it's to protect me and my fragile money.

Shame on you Play.com, my bank balance is in freefall...

Don't tell me nowhere accepts Visa Electron, I've just applied to get one because I'm fed up of paying my parents back. Argh.

*checks that amazon takes it*

I thought 'Electron' was like a pretend card for kids?

It is. We're too young to get credit cards (and too irresponsible).

Can't you get Switch at 16?

Or do online sites not accept debit cards? :(

Electron is shit, get switch or don't bother. Had to walk into barclays & say "change this to a full visa or i'm closing my account" because finding out the bank card you have your salary paid into isn't accepted in rakes of places (refused by boots ffs) was utterly wank.

Fucks sake, I assumed that because we took Visa Electron at work most places would. Nnngh :|

Nah, you get given "Solo" instead.
And Switch/Solo are (aparently) insecure too, at least insecure enough for Dabs.

Some places do take Solo though, more than bloody Electron anyway. It's crap, it doesn't even have embossed shiney numbers like the growned ups have...

All I have to do is wait 2 weeks and get my university place confirmed though then I can get a proper card. :p..

Not that I'll have any money to put in it...

I think it costs shops more to accept electron is why some refuse it.

I really should know the answer to this. But I don't :)

switch is accepted basically everywhere now - hence my account gets hammered cos i find it so easy to spend with it. overdraft don't help..

Having the bank ring me and say...

the bank "would u like a overdraft sir?"

me "er.... i'm fine thanks"

the bank "how big a overdraft would you like?"

me "i'm not interested tbh"

the bank "your overdraft is now setup, you'll recieve confirmation in the mail"

:/

I definately don't want to get a credit card.
As for the electron card, i think i got one as a freebie in a leaflet from barclays one time :) not that i bank with barclays... no way!

Rough order of debit cards:

Visa Electron - "utterly wank"
Solo - pretty poor
Switch - better than Solo, but online retailers don't like it
Visa Debit -

Getting a Visa Debit card once my acceptance letter from Uni comes through :)

I've never had a job, so apparently I will need a student account to get one.

Solo and Electron are basically identical, banks either offer on or the other. Both are shit tho, having said that, more and more places are accepting em.

Never had any problems with Switch myself.

if your going to...

if people are getting credit cards (I know im going to sound like a sales person here), but get a mastercard. i used to work for natwest, 3 years on and off, and believe me, mastercards are f*ing amazing. the legal docs people sign when they get the right to debit money from a mastercard is second to none. You insured upto the back teeth. They really are sooo much better than visa.

Don't get a credit card unless you absolutely have to would be my advice - stick with a debit card (a proper one, like a visa debit card). That way it's much harder to lose track of how much you're spending, credit cards make it oh so easy to spiral into debt - I'm £23,000 in debt (not including the mortgage) at the moment (to be greatly reduced in a matter of days when my house sale is completed though :) ) and it's not pleasant, believe me :/

Credit cards are burn in your pocket, spending spree inducing evilness.

Electron sucks, Solo is alright, but Switch is the daddy.

I thought Visa Debit was meant to be the daddy, which is why it's more difficult to get one...

Visa Debit is no harder to get than Switch - it just depends on who you bank with. The shit banks (Lloyds, Nationwide etc) give you Visa Debit, the good ones (RBOS, HSBC) give you a Switch card. If you can get a Switch card, you can get a Visa Debit card. And they do exactly the same thing.

Personally, I can't wait to get out of uni, so I can get myself an Amex Blue card. Less common than a Visa card, cooler than a Mastercard and that hologram on the front is just too damn funky. It's accepted everywhere that matters, and I have two Mastercards just in case it isnt. Failing that a normal Amex card will do me fine.

I've got an Amex Gold, the blue looks sexier, but the APR is 4.5% higher. I think they're gonna offer me the Centurion tho which is nice, but so very dangerous

I have a bad boy Amex card. Its got 'Corporate' written across the front in fuck-off big letters and a £250,000 credit limit.

I say 'have' - but its not actually mine I suppose.

We get loads of them in at work. They're nice but every rep and his Vectra have one. Even BT employees get them.

As I recall, Electrons require different hardware, which is why no-one takes them. I think.

Got both VISA and Switch via HSBC but a number of places, like Dabs.com, have stopped taking Switch because it still lacks AVS security.

I think a number of places are starting to limit the number of different cards they take.
