/me mutters "xchat rpm is compiled with ssl support...redhat forgot to do the symlinks to /lib/libssl.0.9.6b. ergo all linux sucks and linus should be shot" to Bids

However, as G found out, if one compiles xchat source [by default this does not enable ssl] everything is cool :)

Redhat = sux0r
Mandrake = less sux0r than Redhat

What is it with all the Linux bashing? Whenever Linux is brought up, plenty of [people will just start randomly slagging it off. Hell, when do you see Windows bashing here? Never!

Not really....just find it strange why Linux users get sooo excited over compiling ;)

one doesn't have to bash windows alberto. windows users bash it well enough by themselves aiii :)

I take it you have mandrake in now G?
lately I get the feeling that the distros, tho seemingly very complete, are rather lacking. especially if one compares them to the bsd's. ah well...there's always the next version.

Yes, and the install program was impressive to say the least, unlike the usual "forward/back" style, you can jump anywhere at your leisure.

The root account is more prominantly given its "can total linux in a second" credits & the programs were better ordered & ran more easily.

I still didn't like lilo/grub though, so i'm using a boot disk to do the job atm, till I can be arsed to do the "win2k boot menu" job.

yes, it is indeed rather good :) I've installed it once or twice myself.
in fact, I'll be reinstalling tonight/tomorrow. thinking about going back to good old slackware :)

TDC does this sort of thing turn you on, well you always seem to be installing a different distro every weekend.

no it doesn't actually, installing an os is a necessary evil imo.

Mystic, due to your prompting I installed enigma and I must say I'm quite chuffed with it. There are one or two bits of RedHatWierdness(tm) in there but that's more or less normal.
RH are known for their 'ok' x.2 versions and imo, this one fits the bill as well.
I just slapped it together mind you, and stuck my fave windowmanager of the moment [blackbox -very minimal...CharlieAlpha would love it ;)] on top. All seems to be working perfectly. I'll post a screeny in the desktops thread.

How's your little plaything doing? Reformatted back to windows yet? :D

I don't need to reformat anymore i've got 120gb monster HDD now, I can just leave linux in its space to rot if I feel like it so :p

And I can assure you, I did nothing with RedHat except follow its installation instructions.

I don't like installing programs then having to leave the CD in the drive, its annoying :p

as I did mate. prolly the only diff between our instalations is the fact that I deliberately didn't install a windowmanager [as I wanted to put blackbox in]

and....big drives is teh YUMMEH!!3 :D
