Ther is no current evidence

As cama said, this argument can be applied to everything. Most recent is mobile phone masts. There is no solid evidence of any harm. Any research which seemed to provide a link to cancer etc... has been followed up with better studies which disproved it or has been ripped apart by the scientific community as being an example of 'piss-poor' methodology. It's the same as the arguments about electric power lines. The biggest and most thorough study into anything like this ever was conducted into power lines after some american journalist big on conspiracy theories tried to scare the bejeesus out of the american public. The study refuted any links to cancer and other diseases. Who remembers it ? Noone. Next time some crap scientist wants to make a name for himself he can just do a shit peice if research based on two cases to 'prove' that power lines cause cancer and all the papers will report it. It will increase sales. The public will become concerned because they have no way of telling the good science from the bad science and money will have to be wasted all over again to disprove it.

A photon below the ultraviolet range does not have enough energy to break a chemical bond in DNA. End of story.

How many people know or appreciate this ? Few.

Same with any scientific scare stories. Without a solid understanding of the subject human nature tells us to give roughly equal weight to both sides of an argument. So, any crackpot can scare us into believing that GM crops might just blow up the world in a few years time despite a complete lack of any evidence.

There are already several examples of how "scare" tactics have kept us from solving human tragedies, even years on.

In the early 1960s a book called "Silent Spring" substantiated that the pesticide DDT was contaminating the land and causing wildlife to die out, it was also claimed to have entered the food chain and was dealing out carcinogens.

After over 30 years of research there is still no evidence this is the case. DDT is indeed carcinogenic, but only in very high direct doses, as those experienced by farm workers who handled gallons of the stuff on a daily basis, someone proved this by actually taking a teaspoon of neat DDT every day without developing symptoms, once it has dliuted into the water supply it is too weak to cause problems to man or animal.

The book used unreliable and incorrect evidence which has been disproven, meanwhile there is a general ban on DDT use and modern champions of Silent Spring are pushing for an outright worldwide ban.

DDT is a very effective and cheap anti-malaria agent, the traditional way is to spray the walls of a house every year with a thin coating of the diluted agent. Mosquitos have a severe avoidance to the stuff and use of it virtually wiped out malaria in many countries, including the southern US. Use of DDT in this way is absolutely safe, effective and above all cheap, so it can be employed by poorer countries.

When DDT was withdrawn from sale and production, the malaria rates in africa went back up again, the US was okay as it had effectively eradicated the disease. Every year more than 2 million people die of malaria, mainly children and pregnant women, and many many more are severely affected by it.

But of course, there is "no current evidence" it is safe.

mmmmmmm.. this proves what, exactly? That they are gullible, fat and thick?

And I personally would eat GM food if I was starving, but I wouldn't if I wasn't. The difference is that I am making an informed decision.

everything you eat is genetically modified

farmers breed the best crops, you dont just get them appearing naturally

so whats the difference if by altering a few strands of dna, and getting a change in the next generation
or taking several years by farming practices?

Brass Eye anyone? :D

I appreciate that scare stories abound for the majority of "new" scientific discoveries -

" I say, old chap, if you go over 30mph in that steam locomotive thingy, I'll warrant that you'll suffocate by god" et al

But for every one of those there's a -

" Oh dear Trevor, our babys got no arms. How can that be? mmmmm"

Never, ever, underestimate the ability of the government to shit on the public because it's easier, cheaper, faster or for whatever arcane inside dealing, brown enveloping, back pocketing reason.

It's nothing to do with the government. Newspapers love to hype up scary science stuff. It sells. That's what I'm talking about. Environmentalists love to believe them and prevent people in need getting stuff they could use. That's what cama's talking about. You talk about governments if you want though :)

The only news I see now is on the BBC. I gave up watching ITV news as it sentationalises everything and Channel4 news makes me want to break my tele.

how can you tell then? who do you believe and how much common sense do you inject? consider example below:

labrat: don't eat peanutbutter, it will make your ears pointy.
peanutbutterindustry: no way, our PB is first class. top stuff. no pointy ears here matey. eat! enjoy!
me: I've eaten PB for years and my ears aren't pointy. fuck that.

What about my kids-kids-kids kids? What happens if they develop pointy-ear syndrome? Project that onto GM foods. heh I really could do without this pro-active guilt fs :(

Interesting point. The word "inject " made me think....

I'm not too bothered about myself really as regards gm foods, mobile phones etc (I have a mast on my land actuaaaaly)and besides my liver or kidneys will pack in way before the brain cancer or the pointy ears gets me.

But my kids, well, if Blair don't want his injected with the mmr what can you fuckin believe (I can believe he is a mealy mouthed, ,2-faced holier than thou con artist actually). I try not to feed my kids any gm and keep them away from e-numbers. It wouldn't take too much research to find that government scientists have got it wrong and it's been covered up (beef sandwich anyone?) So I'm quite happy to side with the scaremongers thank you (as long as they let me drive over 30 mph)

rant over (bit pissed, sorry)

I believe that industry will tell you anything at all [that is in their interest to tell you]. I believe governments will do the same thing [more or less].

nah.

:)

This merely confirms that he is a mealy mouthed liar who uses the press when it suits him and complains about privacy when it doesn't.

Off-topic, but one of the worst things he ever did (it's a long list imo) was chastise his son in the media for getting completely shit-faced. Instead of just saying that he was young, ,we've all done it, get over it etc, he chose to get all "preachy" (again). wank. Blair went to university didn't he? Anyone would think the man has never had a wank.

Well, he has got four children and there has been at least one reported miscarriage (fetal that is, not justice).

omfg. Please tell me you were joking (or that it wasn't related to mobile phones)?

A photon is different from a microwave.

1. A photon is a particle of light.

2. A microwave is a shortwavelength radiowave.

(and i appreciate EM radiation and wavelength relationship before any1 starts)

And let me tell you a microwave with a frequency of 2.4Ghz (given that it was transmitted with enough power) will resonate water molecules to the point that they will heat up and "cook" the surrounding area.

Um, all EM is transmitted in packets called Photons whose energy is directly proportional to their frequency. Light, microwaves, x-rays etc...

Sure, if you get enough microwave photons hitting something it will heat up but since there is only a tiny heating effect detected within the brains of mobile users (if at all) which is well within normal variances it's not an issue.
