Probably not the best place to ask but meh, no harm in trying.

I had a nosebleed which lasted about 40minutes of me holding both of my nostrils shut so the blood flew out of my mouth and I had to continually spit it out. Right now, I have tissue in my nostrils to stop it bleeding however I've got quite a big blood clot at the top of my throat, it's bleeding sometimes and filling my mouth and I could cough it out but I'm not sure if that's a good idea :p Anyone experienced this before?

you need to hold the bridge of your nose (not the nostrils) for 10 mins with your head tilted slightly forward ( not back), if it continues get to A & E !!!

If you are still bleeding in half an hour, get yourself off to A&E. You may have ruptured an artery

There are two types: anterior (the most common), and posterior (less common, and more severe). Sometimes in more severe cases, the blood can come up the sinus and out from the eye. Fresh blood and clotted blood can also flow down into the stomach and cause upset stomachs and vomiting.

If pressure, ice on the bridge of the nose, application of a vasoconstrictor, or other techniques do not work, a nasal tampon is usually the next step. The nasal tampon stops the bleeding by applying pressure from inside of the nose and is usually kept in for 1-3 days.

Persistent epistaxis is an indication for urgent medical consultation. Nasal scraping, cryosurgery, electrocautery or application of trichloroacetic acid are options that may be used in severe epistaxis.

It is uncommon to die from bleeding through nosebleeds. However, damage to the maxillary artery can lead to rapid blood loss via the nose and present difficulty in treatment, pressure, vasoconstrictor and rhinocort occasionally proving ineffective. Ligation of the artery, risking damage to the facial nerves, may be the only solution.

A simple treatment for those who have nosebleed on a regular base is to increase your daily dietary fiber intake. This would make the blood coagulation faster and help quickly stop the hemorrhage.

Well it was NHS direct that told me to hold my nostrils so that no air got in my nose whatsoever and dry the blood up and that's what caused the clot and said that 99% of nosebleeds will stop on their own only in very rare cases someone has to end up going to A&E for it, I'm going to the doctors' on wednesday so I'll mention it just not sure what to do right now :p

Leave it the fuck alone

An hour after the bleeding has stopped use steam to loosen the tissue you stuffed up your nose. If you yank it out you may rip the lining of your nose out

This - though holding a cold compress on the bridge of the nose #should# help it clot faster.

Off topic I know - but that's how I've always read your name. Does that say something about me?

Think it says more about me than you :)

But just to make it clear: My name is pronounced 'Core Knocks'

never lean back, always lean forward to create a clot, tilting back can cause choking

I wouldnt worry to much, i have very sensitive blood vessels in my nose and it bleeds quite often (i would probobly bleed for a week if i tried to snort anything)... tip from the pro is like most here already said, pinch nostrils (with a piece of tissue so you dont make a mess) and lean forward slightly, if it bleeds for more then 10 minutes, put an icecube in a piece of toilettissue and hold over the side or the bridge of your nose, if you dont have a piece of tissue you will get very very cold - wouldnt recommend that :)

I get minor nosebleeds daily due to having screwed up the blood vessels when i was a teen - thankfully predictable almost exactly 5 mins after i get out of bed tho!

Seriously though, nothing should bleed anywhere on the body for longer than 25-30 mins - if it does that's a major vein or minor artery bleeding unless you are aggravating it a lot by moving it etc. Good rule in general - if it bleeds more than a whisky tumbler full or longer than 30 mins go straight to A&E and do not pass go.

And yes smart-arses periods are an exception to that i suppose - although i would prefer it if i could send my other half to A&E for a week each month!

Stick a red hot poker up your nose and cauterize that bad boy.

People going to A+E for nosebleeds is fairly common actually I think, i've had lots of friends that have had to. If it bleeds for over 30mins then you should always go, as Lamp said usually ruptered artery or something and they just quarterise that bad boy and you're on your way.

I think coughing out the bloodclot would've been more interesting, was about 3/4th the size of a golfball :p

I get bad nosebleeds every year. Run's for about 10 minutes so I hold a cold tissue on my nose and it seems to stop. Think its where the weather changes, maybe the air pressure?

I was on WAR and we were trying to kill a shaman who was about 10 levels higher than us (pvp server). We finally killed him and I had a nosebleed. The guy was called Nosebleed so I thought it was a super awesome new spell they get!

Go to your doctors, if it was a serious bleed or the bleeds are a regular occurrence then you'll more than likely be sent to an ENT specialist who will cauterise your nose.
