sounds abit mad o_O

guess the planet chooses russia over the US this time :D

Magnetic north moves a bit every year. It took a while for navigators to work this out :) Back in the old days before GPS, Navigators on ships had log tables they used in nav calculations, and this included an adjustment for yearly changes to magnetic north. Its because the Earth 'wobbles' slightly around its axis.

Catsby is less worried about 'wobbles' than about a total reversal of the magnetic axis of the earth.

Sometimes the field completely flips. The north and the south poles swap places. Such reversals, recorded in the magnetism of ancient rocks, are unpredictable. They come at irregular intervals averaging about 300,000 years; the last one was 780,000 years ago. Are we overdue for another? No one knows.

The Earth does indeed wobble, but this is nothing to do with the magnetic field generated by the Earth's core.

Interesting. But we seem to be overdue for a lot of things. Slightly worrying lol.

Well no. But the wobble and the magnetic field are related; its to do with drag in the core which causes the wobble and help creates the field.

...oo oo and the moon, don't forget about the moon!

The earths magnetic field flips periodically.

We can all experience draining water rotating anti-clockwise.

I wonder how birds and fish will cope, they use magnetic navigation don't they? Will we get an influx of African Swallows carrying coconuts for a few days before they realise things aint right? How will the salmon find it's way home?

We need answers people.

Oh, and the coriolis effect has nothing to do with the rotation of the planet.

Doesn't the rotation of the planet have something to do with the coriolis effect tho? :eek7:

Although the rotation of the Earth provides the most obvious examples of the Coriolis effect, it arises in other rotating systems.

You sure? :)

To get the effect you'd have to fill a bowl of water, leave it for about a week on a completely vibration isolated platform, and then drain it through a hole the size of a pinprick.

Sinks and toilets, it doesn't work. Hurricanes, yes. So yes, I'm sure.

Oh yes, i agree, not on a small scale; but im referring to the "coriolis effect isn't caused by earth rotation", but it is :).
