It's arguable, with hindsight, that it would have been better NOT to have invaded Iraq. No WMDs ever found, and the situation in the country now (with at least 2 major factions warring it out, with the US/UK/etc troops either on the sidelines or in the thick of it) is worse than if Saddam was still in power.

But that's hindsight. Had I educated myself more about the Sunni/Shiite situation pre-invasion I might have been of the opinion that any invasion was inadvised, but I didn't. At the time, even with doubt over WMDs, I did think it well worth deposing Saddam. I just never believed, being naive, that things could possibly have turned out as badly as they have as a result.

Finally, does anyone think it maybe wasnt a nuke at all? It strikes me that you could get a pretty good seismic effect with normal explosives if you combined this with destroying a number of tunnels in a deep coal mine.

A very large mass of rock would shift if you collapse deep tunnels - it would be detectable via seismic sensors in the region...
