North Korea says it has carried out its first ever test of a nuclear weapon, the state news agency has reported.

It said the underground test, done in defiance of international warnings, was a success and had not resulted in any leak of radiation.

A South Korean official said an explosion had been detected in the north-east of North Korea, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale.

Well there is a difference between testing a nuclear weapon and launching one, the latter,to me atleast implies the launch of a weapon in anger.

I suspect that the UN will talk about for a few months before coming up with one resolution or another and that will be about the lot.

They didnt launch shit. they probably dont even have the ICBM's capable of launching it anywhere scary to us (or US). They carried out an underground test.

JBP: I dunno about the UN being so weak. China and japan have already said "they won't tolerate it". I wouldn't want to piss those guys off. China is effectively N. Korea's only friend these days as well.

Although if you were some of the more conspiracy minded (read insane) members of this forum, you could say the following. North Korea tested nothing, they released a statement saying they had, and the US and South Korea seeing the oppurtunity backed it up with reports of siesmic activity.

Everyone better get playing Defcon, looks like there might be a demand for people to push the big red button.

To be honest, the rulers of N. Korea deserve lining up and shooting. There is massive famine and poverty and their dear leader does nothing and pretends its not happening and demands small children sing to him about how great he is. The people, though, are just misguided and instilled with bullshit loyalty trash. The only problem with nuking the country into the stone age is the civilian death toll which will surely be massive since I don't imagine Kim Il Jung (?) cares if he has to use 1000 peasants as a human shield.

Yeah they don't have a missile capable of carrying it. I was going for a sensational thread title okay. :(:(:(

I don't think the UN will spent too long on this. John Bolton said just a few days ago that the world would be a different place the day after North Korea tested, if they did test. Although he isn't part of the UN only an envoy from America, it's still something I don't think they can shirk from.
They can't really put sanctions on them though can they? They're in enough of state as it is, and China/South Korea don't want to anger them because any major shift to the country would probably end up affecting their own economy and relations. China and Korea are allies aren't they? Or as much of an ally as you can be to North Korea I guess. :)

You think China needs N Korea? The UN is pretty much obliged to impose sanctions since nuclear testing is now effectively outlawed and only the US and perhaps China would get away with it simply because no one can tell them off.

/edit South Korea is a very rich and prosperous country, they would probably suffer a bit if N. Korea were to get slapped around a bit but they are big enough to take care of them selves. Where would we buy our silicon from if south korea vanished! (and don't say Texas, ya fuckers!)

I edited the title, it was annoying me. Abuse of power etc etc, I know.

Yeah OK a few EU countries would get away with it (us included possibly) but I doubt any of them would actually do it. The US and China, on the other hand, are pretty likely to be wanting to test new weapons at some point and I'm sure they will whether anyone likes it or not.

The US already has sanctions in place with North Korea. I honestly can't see the fact they have tested a nuke as having any effect on them. It does give the UN something to talk about, and it is very handily timed for the US elections...

China puts up with N Korea cause they both have an communist ide or history if you want. Only Sanctions that wud work wud be getting China to stop sending fuel and food over the border, but then again, that wud only hit the common people who have nothing already, the fat bastard leading the show wud probably not loose a pound.
Will be interesting to see tho what China does, as they want to be the daddy of Asia.

The most batshit-crazy country in the world and you're happy they have nukes. I'm sure the South Koreans and the Japanese would concur

The USA won't be entering N.Korea any time soon, not with China so near.

You'll never see a land invasion of North Korea. Someone posted a link on here of photos taken in N. Korea and you can see they have everything covered, years to build up defences and the people would lay down their lives for their leader.

Would be very very messy. A mass strike from the air from a number of forces might be on the cards though?

Iran will be next to test a weapon then where will be? :(

To be honest, we're only fucked when the things start flying overhead. Until that happens nothings really changed. There are plenty of fucktard countries that have nukes that really nobody in their right mind would want to have them. Who's gonna tell me that the thought of the accident prone president walking round with buttons to launch big ole missiles isn't just as worrying?

Well...this scares/worries me as much as the US having nukes. Or japan having nukes...or france...or the superior nation of iceland.

Who gives a f*ck who has the nukes, it's all going to go into the big pile of sh*t that will be launched at that massive fan any minute now.

Thumbs up to N. Korea though since they are the only ones who said "Bring it on" to the US threats. Time someone did.

Fuck's sake. This isn't the fucking playground. The idea that they've done this to poke the US in the eye and somehow that's "cool" is pitiful, and you seem to imply there's some kind of moral equivalency between the US and North Korea, which is one fucked-up way of looking at the world. Unlike just about everyone else in the world, the North Koreans are actually crazy enough to use nukes. In fact probably the only thing that will stop them using them is China. It will also have a knock-on effect of recreating a more militaristic Japan, and that worked out reeeally well last time didn't it?

Googling around, I found this paper from the Center for Nonproliferation Studies - a think-tank who seem to know what they're talking about. It's a summary, as of March this year, of what North Korea could actually hit with current missile systems (in short, Japan/South Korea, yes. USA not really).

um. Japan's PM has already proposed altering their pacifistic constitution to counter this. if they do so, China may or may not be pissed off. seen in the scope of Japan's PM visiting China for the first time in 5 years or so. Tbh, I don't see China being overly pleased with their vassal state parading nukes. N. Korea is only doing it because Mr Kim is a complete nutbag. The people are starving. They have little trade. The country is a shitehole.

They've said they've had them for a while now and this test is just to reinforce that point. I'd guess it'd be used as a barganing chip for a lift of sanctions. Something that won't work.

China's mandate at the moment seems to be to get their economy to be the best in the world, which they are doing a good job at. Flinging these things around is self-defeating and I think everyone realises this now.

If there's no world you can't be the best in it. Well, unless you're the last one left, but then you'd be king of a radioactive pile of shit.

This shit used to scare the crap out of me and I have to admit, when I saw the title of the thread I had a the old stomach butterflies again. Now I've had some time to digest the news I'm not to worried tbh.
