How it can be done

Well it's pisseasy to 'hack' someones computer.
You don't need to know alot about programming or coding to get someones pass/login.

You all know how E-mail sites work.
You need to enter a name, some text and sometimes a file attachement.
The hacker isn't really interested in name or text. He wants the txt file on your computer with all the info in it.

Alot people keep the info in files like 'daoc.txt' or 'password.txt' . The hacker knows this and sends(Email) all those files to him
You don't need to browse to that file like on Email sites, he just guesses the name of the file and the path on your computer.
Maybe there are more advanced ways to discover the name/patch of those password files, I don't know that.

Sending those files to the hacker needs time (uploadtime).
Let's say he puts a nice Flash movie on the site. From the start you press 'play' ,
the site will search and send the files to him.

This is how it can be done

tip:

-rename your password files to something stupid
-remove it and put it on a paper
-don't press URL's on IRC (except .jpg urls)

Some .jpg's can also do harm. There are .jpg's that can start scripts in some weird way I have no idea of how.

As i wrote earlier on a post where some1 complained about some1 having been logged in to their acct.
And being shure not have given out password etc.

That poor sod lost epic armour and gold if i recall correctly.

The daoc client communicates in un encrypted manors.
during login process and during gameplay.

Having had a past as a "interested" computer user, i have played with alot of stuff.
Among them sniffing which i still do, since i do not trust ANY software i install, to keep my identity and integrity safe.

I always sniff periodically. and have quite a "tightly" setup firewall.
u would be surprised at the information that gets sent out just by booting up windblows.

to the point...

daoc and the client sends out and recieves virtually no encrypted information.
Some information is not very informative such as movement data etc.
But at the login phase the information is critical.

At a "hubbed" and on older "switched" networks, sniffing is possible.
sniffing is listening on broadcasted or "forced"(arp poisoning etc) broadcasted IP packets, udp packets etc.

The sniffer catches these packets and displays them in clear sight.
They can even be filtered on some programs so only packets with "pasword" "login" and such are saved in the sniffer.

Hubbed networks are common still unfortunately.
examples are IT cafe´s, wireless lans, lans, Cable networks and some older networks.
And some still have old switches that can be forced to leak (broadcast) tcp/ip packets.

I have no idea if u are in one of those categories, but by this information i may help others here to avoid this in the future.
And having made this point here and on mythics own boards, so they can make the client more secure.

Sad to hear that yet another nice fella has gotten to be a victim of sucky asswipers fro mars.

The same thing I got when some dungheap got a hold of my password and deleted all my chars, including a 43 skald.

Seriously, Funcom managed to make a new char for me in AO after mine got corrupted a while ago.

Now, why can't GOA just do the same to us?
The attitude they have towards this increasing problem is just: "Fuck off, good day. Go bother someone else."

Why Mythic gave the rights to a company from a country where a shop owner can throw you out just because you can't speak french is beyond me.(Apologies to any french people that are offended by this remark.)
