Do the speakers 'pop' when you turn the computer on?

no i dont get anything, first off it was connected to the TV, but as i couldnt get sound thru that i ttried me head phones and i still could not get any sound. shuttle webby says its got Realtek audio but when yer click the drive/download tab its just gives you nforce drivers, odd thing is when i just had the nforce drivers installed and played a movie/mp3 the equliser that came with the nforce drivers would jump, so its processing sound but just not outputing it

You can use realtek drivers on an Nforce board, when I got my a7n8x I did that and it worked better.

If you don't hear anything when you connect the power to the computer, I would suggest either a jumper is missing on the board, or the mobo is broken.

By the way, is onboard sound enabled in the bios?

Ok, a minor but rather important misconception to sort out here.

On nForce2 boards, the DSP (and sound chip) is the Soundstorm Audio Processor and MUST have the nForce Forceware driver installed to work. You can install an optional Realtek driver for the codec chip, but it's not compulsory.

nForce3 however has no Soundstorm and the majority of boards use a Realtek audio chip and their codec, it won't work without the realtek driver.

Yaka - I'd try removing the RealTek software, uninstalling the nForce drivers and reinstalling the latest version - NVIDIA have a new v5 driver on their own site. If you're getting activity on the soundstorm monitor but no sound out try the digital connector - and check the control panel hasn't defaulted to digital out if the outputs you've been trying thus far are only the 3.5mm stereo jacks.

You can't convert digital audio to analogue without a DAC. So no, you can't buy a 3 quid convertor from Maplins :)

Can't you buy some 'digital' speakers or something instead?

I'd reflash the latest BIOS, wipe the CMOS memories and set it all back up. Chances are something in there has just gotten b0rk3d and is forcing it to output digital only. Stranger things have happened.
