My wife has a Packard Bell Easynote that stopped working yesterday, it just wont switch on. I thought the powewr adapter was knackered so I bought one of those generic things from PC World but it still wont switch on. The light on the new adapter blinks when you plug it into the laptop, the light on the old adapter doesn't come on at all whether it's plugged into the laptop or not - I'm not sure if it's meant to come on though when it's not plugged into the machine?

Anyway I was wondering if maybe the battery is knackered? Would this stop it from coming on even with the power supply plugged in? Or is there something else I can look at? I have no experience with repairing laptops so don't really know where to look.

My friend had this problem, and the people had to replace the motherboard twice. Once was because it failed on it's own, and the other time was because the power socket was pushed right into the case, snapping it off the motherboard.

the laptop should work without the battery in if its plugged into the mains and its power is working right

Oh, sounds pretty serious then. She's not that bothered if we have to buy a new one, only it means not being able to get all the stuff off the old one, well not very easily anyway as far as I know?

you will need the following:
1x screwdriver
1x 40 to 48pin ide cable (like the one available from Kustom PCs )
(or if you want, a 2.5" USB External Enclosure like This one again from Kustom PCs)
1x hour worth of unscrewing and putting stuff together

those small USB caddys are sometimes troublesome after a while (i've had two at work just knacker themselves entirely) but very handy, especially when it comes to portable documents.

Thanks, I'll give that a go if all else fails.
