actually, half my family is roman catholic. ive been to their christenings, weddings etc. every time its the same. the priest is wittering on that "why are you here at this babies christening, none of you will come to church again. you are all going to hell!". every priest we had, has always comes across as rude, abrupt, harsh and arrogant. if i dont believe in god then i dont need someone telling me i will goto hell. thats just a waste of time isnt it?

and like i said, that pic represents how roman catholics come across to ME. the ones ive met and had the displeasure to experience. not every single one in the universe.

i know its important what people think of my behaviour. but once you get scared to express an oppinion incase someone doesnt like it, well whats the point anymore? if i have an oppinion i will give it. i dont really care what your view is on me anymore after that.

still, if i cant say i think religion is silly, then why should religious people be allowed to preach things. things i may find offensive? they can offend me but not vice versa? :/

edit: if this post is full of errors, soz. i woke up at 3am and havent been able to sleep since. on top of that i got a final exam in 4 hours. woot :(

You've been very unlucky then as all the Roman Catholic priests I've had the pleasure of knowing have been caring and kind - giving rise to the old addage there's fault in any large organisation.

You also didn't say religion is silly, if you'd said that this thread would probably have either died a death or continued down the Sunday being a day of rest theme because . . .

However, you actually used words which were insulting towards religion, which pretty much guarantees you're going to get a rise out of people no matter what their own personal beliefs are.

And, no one said you couldn't express an opinion but there are certainly ways and means of doing it that wouldn't have received the same reaction.

As a PS, hope the final exam went well :)

thanks for that. it went ok ish. half the info just vanished from my brain as soon as i sat down :/

but back to the point. why is it fine for religion to preach things i find offensive, but i cannot be offensive back?

e.g. telling me homosexuals are bad and wrong and should goto hell and its against god. well im not homosexual (and btw, im one of the most open minded people i know ;) (this is @ your point from the last post)), but i find that offensive to what i believe.

i believe there is nothing wrong with homosexuals. they are just people and to tell me what i believe goes against god so its wrong, well i dont see that as fair at all.

answer meh :D

Because religion doesn't say that, people do. As with everything, it is the individual's take on what or how something should be interpreted.

I'm not saying everything in religion is correct, I'm a Catholic and I think not using a form of contraception is bollox just as one example.
Belief in a particular religion doesn't mean you take as 'Gospel' every single thing that other humans have declared over the years. You use your own interpretation of the teachings within the boundaries of your own understanding.

However, even when I don't agree with something I don't go round telling people their beliefs are a total load of bollox, or however it was you phrased it :)

There's nothing wrong with you having an opinion and being offended by some religious teachings but you'll probably get a lot further in an argument by being able to justify why you think that (as you have since gone on to do) than just saying I think this is bollox so I'm right and you're wrong.

As for why there's no post on a Sunday, cos it's a left over from the old days when Sunday was a day of rest and it gives the posties a day to stick their feet up ;)

<gives Tris an A+ for effort>

at least youve stuck with the discussion and continued to try and get your point across and not "gone off on one" :)
