Held a LAN at the weekend for around about 40 people. Just out of interest, and to prove how fickle PC's can be I thought Id post the problems I had.
I took 4pc's (XP3000, XP2500, P4 2.8 and a P4 1.8), 3 monitors and a few switches.
My home PC, the XP2500, which has my Steam install on it, threw a drive (just happened to be the one with Steam on it). No CS for me then
Brand new 19"TFT, unpacked at the event, didnt work. How gay?
XP3000 running on an Nforce2 board, 2 on board nics, neither worked, installed a PCI card pinched from another machine, didnt work. Ended up fitting a brand new one.
Router running DHCP threw its hand in, had to run a machine as a dedicated DHCP. (which actually worked really well)
48pt Cisco 10/100/1000 switch borked. Had to recycle the power a few times, but sorted itself out. Even the most expensive piece of kit there gave us problems.
On the upside, 16player FarCry rocks (so long as its on a dedicated server) as does 32man BFV.
