Since Photoshopping seems to be fotm, I thought I´d share this nice effect trick for PS. Works with any version.

open a new image

create a layer and fill it with a colour

create another layer and fill it with another colour

apply a "bevel and emboss" layer style to the second layer

add a layer mask to the second layer, set it to "hide all"

get a thin pencil or brush and start painting around on the layer mask

nice effect innit :)

If you have other tricks to share, feel free to post them here

basically you´re "automatically" adding a bevel/emboss to your brushstrokes.
Saves loads of time when you have to draw something and want to add highlights/shadows to give it a 3d-ish look.

Here´s another one...

Anyone remembering the outdoor levels in Unreal 2? There was this organically looking surface, which looked as if you were running around on an open brain or some gibs. Making a surface like this is pretty easy actually.

1. Create an image, fill it with dark-ish red.

2. Set your dodge/burn tool to 20% and highlights, get a decent sized brush and start making some highlights and shadow areas

3. Continue this process until the entire image is "scupltured" and you´re satisfied with the structure.

4. Add a plastic wrap filter to the layer, set details quite high and play arouhnd with highlight strength and smoothness until you´re happy.
