No offense old.tohtori, but I don't think you (or anyone else on these forums for that matter) is in a position to make a reasonable prediction/hypothese about what may or may not happen when the LHC gets going. I think we'll leave the professors to decide on that, and I trust their decision, not the conspiracy theorisers who get their info off wikipedia.

Isn't it only being funded by the EU/Organisations in the EU? (even though the Swiss are neutral..) Wonder what the US would have to do if they utilised it. Hell, this could be the next ideal way for reproducable power (If it were to be utilised)

Hay why is this getting heated?

None of us know for sure either way, are any of us capable of stopping this? Possibly, but it would probably result in alot of trouble for the person/people concerned. So it boils down to, how strongly do people feel about this?

I'm suprised extremists havent had a go at blowing it up tbh, I wonder what would happen if they did that in the middle of a test? I imagine fail-safes would stop anything too bad from happening though.

At the end of the day, this is all 'above our pay-grade' - its a decision for the EU to make, which in turn is (in most cases) governed by 'duly elected' people. So if there was something to worry about, its reasonable to assume someone in power would've stepped in by now.

Lets all be reasonable about this - there have to be alot of fail-safes and tests aimed at ensuring the safety of this thing, it just makes no sense that intelligent people - and thats what they are, at the end of the day - would rush into something like they do in a cheap hollywood disaster film, I just cant see it happening that way.

And anyway, after all is said and done, whats the alternative? Dont turn it on? Let it sit there and do nothing? Its the way technology works, had this been ten or twenty years ago we probably wouldnt have even heard about this, its just because of the way the informaiton is being shared now that we get the chance to debate it over our virtual pint of beer.

I guess all I'm trying to say is that theres no point in having a big flaimwar about it.
