Anyone use it? I have recently started downloading again and my speed has been cut from 14mbs p/s to 6mb p/s. Anyone else noticed a cut in speed?

Still 8-10mbs for me,

It's probably your ISP rather than your newsgroup provider though, run a tracert to it to see where the bottleneck is

Maybe it has something to do with the post date? I am downloading something that is over 60 days old. Does this have something to do with it?

Edit: Its not my ISP I dont think as I contacted Sky who said my connection is fine and other places (webistes) I dl from, I get best part of 16mb

Nop shouldn't matter at all

open up a command prompt
(start->run->cmd)

then type:
tracert (your newsgroup provider name without the brackets)

It won't be anything to do with Newzbin - they don't host any files, they're just an indexing service. It could be your ISP or your newsgroup provider. If you're having trouble with your current one, I'd strongly suggest giganews - massive retention and very quick downloads.

Marc what package are you on?
Lite or unlimited?

Server info:
Code:
NHXL:

    * hostname: nhxl.newshosting.com
    * port: 119
    * max connections: 20
    * standard ports: 119, 23, 25, 80, 3128
    * SSL ports: 443, 563

NH Unlimited:

    * hostname: unlimited.newshosting.com
    * port: 119
    * max connections: 8
    * standard ports: 119, 23, 25, 80, 3128

Europe: NH Unlimited

    * hostname: news.ams.newshosting.com
    * port: 119
    * max connections: 8
    * standard ports: 119, 23, 25,80, 3128

NH Lite:

    * hostname: news2.newshosting.com
    * port: 119
    * max connections: 20
    * standard ports: 119, 23, 25, 80, 3128

So to run a tracert you would type

Code:
tracert news.ams.newshosting.com

Ahhhhh newshosting is your news hosting. That's why I got confused. Yes, do what chronic said, or move to giganews. It's Aces McWin™.

Oh, and get Grabit it's grand.

you might want to edit out the first 4 lines, and it looks fine to me

you sure your ISP isn't throttling your connection? it looks like it is all working fine to be honest so either your ISP or your newsgroup provider are slowing it down on purpose

Using Newshosting here and it's fine for me, although I don't get your sort of speeds anyway. I'd love 6 Meg/s. :p

virgin media say unlimited downloads, but in small print, if you exceed x amount of bandswidth between certain times, you get throttled for 5 hours.. sux ;\

Yeah, it's not peer to peer, it's hosted which means you get constant fast speeds - no worrying about seeders. You need to pay access to newsgroups (usually, unless your ISP provides it) and then newzbin is a site that indexs the content in to handy packets. You download an nzb which is a tiny index file, pop it in to your news reader software and it fetches all the referenced files.

Newsgroups are utterly fantastic tbh.

Try using one of the other servers and check your number of connections in whatever program you use to actually download.

Newsgroups are utterly fantastic tbh.

EDIT: Or it could just be your ISP, I use virgin and if I use it during the day I get capped at 25% speed if I download a certain amount in an hour or something. Going from 2.4mb/s to 500k/s sucks :(

How are they more secure and more reliable? :p RS is always there, giving max speed and with no security issues :d

Usually people who buy subscriptions to newsgroups get ones with SSL encrypted traffic, so noone can see what you are downloading

The actual "links" are from a indexing site which almost never are broken so you almost always get the complete thing you are downloading.
Most files also come with repair files so even if a link is downloading 95% of the time you can fix it

Rapidshare on the otherhand is in plain sight as the traffic is not encrypted your ISP in reality knows everything you have downloaded

But obviously it comes at the cost of a more expensive solution than rapidshare

Ok, so ive noticed that my subscription is for 12 connections, but the top subscription is 20 connections. Maybe this is what is causing it? I cant remember if last time I paid for the top package, maybe I did?

that would most likely reduce your speed a bit yeah

12 connections should be plenty, I can max out my 3.5 Meg connection with 1 connection.

I don't... I use 8 connections... but I could. :p
