I've been following through the instructions in Testings column update from a few weeks ago to setup a spare box as a router/firewall for the rest of the network.

I've successfully installed Red Hat 7.0, and everything is working fine. The only problem I am having is when it comes to compiling a newer kernel. I've followed the instructions in the column, and everything appears to work, but when i restart and try to boot using the new image, it stops after the line:

Uncompressing Linux ...... Ok, booting the kernel

I've tried using 2.4.2, 2.4.3 and 2.4.4 versions of the kernel all with the same results. I can only assume I'm failing to select something at the make menuconfig stage, but I can't really see anything obvious.

Because that GShield thing requires a 2.4 version of the kernel I'm kinda stuck till I can solve the problem, and the rest of the network is without internet access, so any help would be much appreciated. :)

The PC is a Cyrix P166+, 64Mb memory, 4Gig HD, 2xNICs, etc.
I thought at first I might have to select something extra in the config section since I was using a Cyrix CPU, but I didn't see anything, so I'm out of ideas atm.

I do [see something -I hope :D] I think you're compiling for the wrong processor arch.
As you're running a [ibm]Cyrix set your cpu arch to 386 in 'Processor Types and Features' when compiling your kernel. That should do the trick.
Optionally you could experiment by going to '5x86', but '386' will work.

Also, just to be on the safe side, I use gShield cos I am picky and want a 2.4.x kernel. There are many equally good firewall scripts and apps that run on 'ipchains' or pre 2.4.x kernel firewalling code. Check out freshmeat and do a search for 'firewall'

Cyrix - oh dear!

Yep, nothing wrong with an earlier kernel, I'm using 2.2.5 with no problems.
I can recommend a good book for learning how to set up a firewall - "Linux Firewalls" by Robert L. Ziegler. It doesn't cover the latest firewalling code but does cover ipchains and the older ipfwadm. I got mine from PC world (hangs head in shame).
