Help New to eve

Right, now im new to eve..

I've read several FAQ's gamer guides and been trolling forums..
However, from movies, threads, posts, faq's... I still dont have a clue how this game works.

Am I a spaceship? Am I a dude inside a spaceship?
Must I mine? Howlong does this take?
Is it very time based?

can somebody please explain to me how this game is set-up?

You're a dude (or dudette) in a pod (an egg type thing) which is then put into any ship you pilot. In space you just see the ship you are currently in unless it has blown up, in which case you see the pod!

Must I mine?

No, you don't have to! I use an alt to mine when I'm not paying attention. It is a good semi-passive isk generator. Albeit, a very poor one

Is it very time based?

Skills train over time. Whether you are logged in or not. Ensure you always have a skill training, so when you play set a short skill and make sure you leave yourself training a slightly longer one during work / school etc.. You can switch your training at any time with no penalty.

To get the best benefit to your character it is helpful to train the learning skills but don't do this at the expense of your will to live as there are more interesting things to train.

Do the tutorial - it is very very good.

The best way to plan in eve is decide what kind of character would you like.

A decent combat character?
A heavy hitter?
An industrialist?
A recon pilot?
A fast tackler?
