New Player + Terrible Manual = Bad Combination

Hi all, I picked up SWG (the triple pack) the other day and have been trying to figure out how to play the game. Am not having an easy time of it - the walk throughs themselves are not that easy to follow and the manual, if it can be called that, is utter rubbish.

Would be grateful for any tips - but, in particular, I'd love to know how to fly! Does anyone know what the controls/display modes are?

I was doing okay-ish, I think, then I got a message from another ship or spacestation. After much pressing of random keys I found a mode that allowed me to use the mouse and click a response ... but now, despite switching back to using the mouse to steer, the ship is extremely unresponsive.

Ending up logging in disgust last night, so would be very grateful for any help. Cheers.

Turamber, I played swg at launch, it was bugged, although the star-wars-ee feel was really good.
I havented played for over a year, or was it two.
If you want me to reactivate, perhaps we can duo a bit and explore the game etc?

Sounds good Tilda. I'm not playing every day though, and have only really explored the space side of the game so far. Let me know if you reactivate. I'm playing on the Euro Farstar server, name of Tura M'ber (I know, so sad).

The best place to start is the Holocron for very basic information.

The best tips for flying i can give are:

Tab targets the nearest enemy ship.
T and Shift-T cycle through enemy ships.
Num-Lock activates camera guided view (in case you get stuck in it by accident, its a pain in combat).
Mouse scroll back zooms out of your ship and scroll-in zooms in to cokcpit view (handy for looking around when in combat for what is shooting you)
Check your speed (Default Cursor Up and Down), the slower you go, the more manouverable you are, but dont go too slow either!
Spin! (Default cursor left ans right) Makes you harder to hit for head-on attackers.
N Brings up the map.
Alt Gr (on my keyboard anyway) is default mouse pointer activate, allows you to type, select inventory etc)
Shift-C communicates with space stations, i think you have to be within 1100m.
If your a Rebel pilot, use your tier 1 ability if in trouble (i forget the name, but its scrambles enemy ships, stopping them attacking for a short period, essential for the early game when your up against 8 ships)
Upgrade your ship! The Prototype kit is pretty good, so be careful of upgrading it, some looted items are worse than the basic free kit you get.
Sell your unwanted loot! Find a Chasis Dealer (there is one in almost every starport), all loot is worth a minimum 1k credits!
Backpack! Use it (Wear it!!) as it allows you to carry more, nothing worse than running out of inventory room when in space, means you may lose some choice loot!
Bank your credit chips.
Use the reticule, line your moving reticule up with the green one generated by the targetted enemy ship when firing (this is ESSENTIAL to master) to hit them.
Enjoy flying, it's the best thing in the game and the only reason i play SWG (too many Jedi, etc etc etc :)).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips! I upgraded to a new ship (Dunelizard or some such) this evening and spent some time running around the galaxy buying components for it. Some good stuff on it (tier 3 equipment, best I am certified for) but also some crappy tier 1 stuff. Should be able to grind tier 1 ships now though for drops and cash - and maybe, just maybe, manage to do my missions.

I found I could kill the tier 2 ships in my prototype but it took so long that I often auto-failed the missions. Should have a much better chance now. Am now 1111 in all my skills.

In between shopping trips I upgraded my weapon skills, am now a whopping CL5! Woot (!). My intention is to go carbine/squad leader, although scouting xp is slow to come along.

Must say the game is a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Sure beats sitting in queues while "playing" WoW.

I found when i first started that getting help from other players helped alot. I also had 3 friends playing with me, so we helped eachother alot ;) I know nothing of space or the wookie planet, i have neither of those expansions >.< Hoping to get space though, looks fun. Good luck ;)

You should be able to easily kill tier 2 ships in a basic ship with prototype kit in almost no time.

The trick is to adjust speed and roll them back into your gun-sights when they try to run.

With equipment be careful to choose the ones that work with your combat style and ship type. Slow, powerful cap draining lasers often wont work too well on a fast ship with a low cap for example.

Visit a Cantina and listen to the musicians or watch the dancers to get an Inspiration Buff, this can last up to 2 hours i think (longer you listen, longer it lasts) and increases ALL xp by 10%!!!

For scouting xp kill and skin/bone/gut your kills and get the improved harvesting skills (forget the line) so you can harvest more.

A good tip is to focus on one weapon type and target groups of mobs lower than your level (if your CL5, CL2 is ideal). You can farm these incredibly fast and the xp is only slightly lower then CL3-4 mobs.

Cheers. I am not very good at the space game, mostly because my optical mouse is rather crud for twitch games - will get a joystick at some stage. Am now messing about with the ground game having joined a guild.

The guild are great and arrange hunting sessions most nights, which is good because newbies have a rough deal on Farstar. The only groups going are with higher levels and they don't invite low levels - just last night I actually got invited to a high level group killing CL80s, but then the motive became clear as he told me I had to sell him my Barc speeder to stay in the group. As soon as I declined I was dumped.

I am going to suck it up tonight though and look for creatures around CL5 (I am CL10) to kill solo before the guild logs on. I don't like to rely upon anyone to make progress in a MMOG, so I am going to test my ability to level myself (should be worth a laugh).

Just FYI, the BARC speeder is worth 4million+, dont even consider selling it for less.

Post the guys name please or pm me with it, a large number of us formed a pact to ostracise people who try and exploit new players (basically a name-and-shame that is read by almost all guilds).

He will do what he did to you to other players, and tbh its just not-on.

I resubscribed and created a charachter on your server Turamber, still a total noob charachter, but I got my speeder! :D
I was going to get the space expansion and thought i'd payed for it, however my emails seem to be messed up so it hasn't come yet.
Is your guild still recruiting, as i could certainly use people to talk to.

Yep, I'm in a guild named Ritual Union and the guildmaster is DeHades. Feel free to pm either him or Tura (that's me!) for an invite. We have a cosy little town on Rori, one of the moons of Naboo. Would be good to see you! :)
