New phone - 6220?

Hi all - would appreciate a smidge of advice.

My phone contract expires at the beginning of next month, and as such I'm eligible for a phone upgrade. My current phone is the Sony Ericsson T68i which, while it's a decent phone, isn't the most user-friendly I've ever come across. That and it's damned slow at texting.

Therefore, I'm planning on avoiding Sony Ericsson for my next purchase, and going instead for a Nokia. The one I'm currently looking at is the Nokia 6220 (piccy) which looks to be reasonably well-featured (with the exception of Bluetooth, but Nokia aren't too hot on that in general).

Has anyone got any thoughts on this phone, or suggestions for alternatives?

Have a look at the T610, very popular, and very good. Also, consider getting a Three contract, and seeing if your current phone will accept the Three SIM card. If it does, you can then sell the Three phone on Ebay.

Maybe I should clarify:
  • When will it be available from the O2 online store, as they're the only people so far who I've seen offer 500 free texts a month?
  • How much will it cost there?
I'm expecting it won't be cheap, as they're still charging £50 for the 6220...

You may get a different price from O2 if you phone them up asking to upgrade your contract Fatty. Depending on how flexible they are in that respect these days.

The phone itself looks very nice I must say.

My questions answered:

It's out now. It costs £50 on contract.

And I'm planning on getting it - from what I 've seen it's the dog's danglies :)

I use my phone for business so my bills are higher than the average user so I got it for free. I'm on ONLINE 200 with O2 fyi.

I got a confirmation email this morning saying it had been dispatched so I shall hopefully be able to play with it this weekend and let you know what it's like. I'd act fast if you want it cos the guy I spoke to at 02 said they were moving like hot cakes.

EDIT: It's only been on the website since about midday last thursday.

Got the phone, love it so far.

I fancied using the bluetooth function on it so I got myself a nice Logitech MX900 mouse.
I don't even know where my phone is in the lounge right now but I can log onto it and transfer mp3's regardless. :)

Seconded - from my reasonably extensive play with it, it seems to be rather nice.

The software is a tad quirky though, but better than the (rather poor) SonyEricsson software.

I got the 6230 on Thursday mainly after reading this review although I was either going to get the 6230 or wait for the 7650 to be released.
The phone is excellent, the quality of the mp3 playback took me by surprise and the fact you can use MultiMediaCards for storage was one of the major factors why I brought it. Although I had some early problems with the sw, a simple firmware upgrade seems to have sorted it.

It's a superb little phone, I've got a 512mb MMC in mine with about 450mb of mp3s on it :) the rest saved for random silly shit that you do with camera phones etc..

Also for work I got the speaker/charger/hands free conference call thingy and the sound quality is quite nice. So I now have a little mini stereo system at work with quite a few songs all just from my phone :) good stuff Nokia! And as far as I know is this the first mobile phone to allow you to set an mp3 as a ringtone? How good is that, all these twats who think they're great with piss poor midi renditions of songs when they get calls and mine belts out the opening bars of 'Bad to the bone' by George Thorogood :D Fantastic.

Oh and I got it on O2 for £25 with 500 texts and 300 off-peak minutes at £20 a month. Seems ok as I don't use the phone excessively anyway.

I'd read on forums that the n-gage (another nokia phone) had troubles with 256 meg memory cards and above and that nokia only officially said these phones took 128 meg cards. As a result I only have a 128 meg card so I'd be interested to hear how you get on with your 512 meg card over time.

Had no trouble with mine, however I've heard the phone won't recognise a 512mb card so you need a card reader to put the stuff on it initially which is what I did. Got my card and a Belkin reader from www.expansys.com and the site also has a forum you could read about any problems that may occur. You could probably pick them up cheaper from ebay or some other budget retailers but I was quite happy with the service and what I got, I also got my speaker/charger from there. Not trying to plug the place though :p just saying what I got and where :)

Most people at work are verily impressed/envious of the fancy phone and ringtones and mini stereo system I've got going on :)

I may well get one of them 512 meg cards then cos I've been farting about converting tracks down to 96kpbs to get the most out of the card and the either the phone or the convertion software is pants and certain converted tracks crash the phone.

I've got a card reader too although it's only USB1. Does this make a huge difference to USB2?

I'm starting to get a small pile of memory cards that will probably never be used cos I only require 1 card at a time i.e. the biggest. Anyone else?
So far I've got 2x16mb xD memory cards lying idle (although I do swap one of them in and out of my xD usb key reader, very handy), I've got a 128meg SMC for my GP32 but since I never really use that any more now I've got mp3 capability in my phone you COULD say it's redundant. I've got the 32meg MMC that came with the phone and if I get a 512meg card I'll have a redundant 128 meg MMC too. Are they worth flogging on ebay at all? They're not worth too much at all are they?
