Yes, but usually within a week of a brand new card being released, the prices on the old cards will go down quite a bit, so even if you are not really interested in brand new high-end equipment, waiting a few weeks on a new release might be a sweet way to get a more affordable deal and save some bucks.

normally would agree with you but these months are an exception
It's not just a new card, its a nw generation of card meaning the old ones will be phased out, in other word big price drops to clear shelves

Since ever, you never been to Rio DG, they're flaunting the Queens head like it's going out of fashion! 5 pounds here, 20's there and even a few 50's! Quite incredible really!

Don't folk bother with ATI anymore then?

I really like ATI still to be fair.

I'd just like to add that almost all the stuff I mentioned I can safely back up their performance with multiple tests from very reliable sources, it really is the best you can get in your pricerange, reason I probably have spent so much time in doing this is that I've been looking for parts myself for that price and this is what I've come up with from looking at the future and the now for over 3 months... now I just need a bloody job so I can buy it all :p

Tss tss. Komplett.se having 30% off on their 3870x2. Best performance/money out there in sweden atleast.

Next ATI cards looks very interesting. While not having the performance of the new nVidia flagships it will "only" be priced around 200-300$, while the nVidias will be 500-650$. And they seem to have alot of nice functions aswell (espically low power consumption compared to nVidia). Might be a winner for us that can't afford best of the best :)

IMO what people have to think of these days are the current cards ATI 3870X2 & Nvidia 9800 GX2 are not even being used to their full potential even now and if you have one of these or close what is the point in upgrading?

Both cards are great and will run games on high settings for well over 1-2 years to come and with the new cards coming out these will be reduced in price.

I have always been an ATI guy since my 8500-9800pro-x850pro-3870 x2 and all cards have served me well and lasted me a while and i will consider upgrading the 3870x2 in 2 years time or more :)

My next card will probably be an Nvidia as i have never had one and such like to test new waters :)

Main reason to get nVidia rather than ATI nowadays, and the last few years is because they bought every single game company so you have alot better optimized drivers for them and avoid lots of stupid bugs.

Since my pc is failing atm and Im considering a new one. Is there any changes to these choices? Havent kept up to speed etc.

The 8800 gts still the best bet? Any other changes in processors dropping prices or the like?

Check out the new ATI 4850 and 4870 cards. "4850" beats "9800 gtx" and 4870 matches and often beats Nvidias new 260 card. Cheapest ATI 4870 card goes for about 333 bucks in Sweden. Cheapest nvidia 260 gtx goes for about 500 bucks and more.

an E8400 and a Radeon 4850 is a solid bet nowdays yeah, won't find any game that will have problems running on high graphics aslong as you stay around 1600 resolutions :)

Its funny the way things work, it seems the new ATI 4000 series is going to be the best value for money, the 4870 looks to be a monster of a card, in fact I've put my new PC on hold till I can get my hands of one of them.

The 4000 series is probably the best price/performance card series ever made, they are truly spectacular - I'm just praying that ATi can keep up marketing for them, would be a proper shame if they loose money on the cards and we'd get stuck with nVidia again pushing out their 40% of a normal guys salary cards.

Ok, gonna order tonight when I get home. Im still not sure about the videocard though.

I see two options really: An 8800gts (9800gtx costs way more, and there doesnt seem to be a big difference) or a 4850. In price they are quite comparable. Tests seem to favor the 4850, but heat might be an issue in my small case, so what would be the best option?

HD4850, if you are worried about heat - get a custom fan, they are dirt cheap and would solve the heat problems.

It's really quite stupid not to get an HD4850 atm, they are that good.

How about 4850 vs 4870 then? :p Also, what kind of custom fan would that mean? (since yeah I really fear the heat might get to it!)

These will be the last questions, really! ANd thanks for all the help. ;)

Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition

I have one of these inside my machine, its a almost 3 years old and seems to work fine for me. Whats the consensus on this card? Too old, too slow, throw it away?

Buy new PC
Masturbate all over it
Take it back to the Customer Service Desk
Order the clerk to lick the jizz off or demand they upgrade the system
If they refuse, take a dump on their printer paper section.

That concludes this morning's PC World Staff Training Programme. Have a nice day !

The 4870 is also a very solid card, if you are going to play in higher resolutions definetly go for it, else the 4850 will be more than enough(1600-1900+ resolutions is where the 4870 starts to shine, lower than that and you can just max any game anyways depending on the rest of your computer).

Most sites who sell videocards sells cooling for them aswell, just have a look around - 99% of them will mention what cards they fit on. After you found a decent fan costwise just look it up on some hardware sites for reviews and compare how much a difference they make.
