New mobo and memory recommendations

I'd also advise buying the CPU, mobo and heatsink from the same place, that way if any go wrong you can ditch the whole lot back on them and they can sort it out.

Beats two suppliers blaming each other.

Hehe. Final shopping list?

Here's how it's looking with Overclockers UK (they seem to be the only retailer with all of these components:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 (Socket A) Motherboard (MB-019-AS)
£96.90
AMD Athlon "Thoroughbred" XP 2700+ 333FSB (Socket A) CPU - OEM (CP-031-AM)
£124.90
2 x TwinMOS 256MB DDR PC3200 CAS2.5 (MY-000-TM)
£66.70
Subtotal £288.50
Shipping (Amtrak Next Day (Mon-Fri) - UK Mainland) £8.50
VAT £51.98
Total £348.98

Not too bad. CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE, PEOPLE! ;)

Thanks for all your extensive help so far, peeps. Greatly appreciated. :)

Don't get generic ram, I did for my Shuttle and I have had to send it back on the basis that its shite and crashes the machine :/

They will of course argue that their little P100 doesn't have any problems with it but I hope to get a refund so I can get 2x 512Mb Crucial sticks :)

Yeah, have to confess to the 'non-brand' memory making me uneasy. :/ Corsair is double the price, though.

I have a Zimmer-thingy flower heatsink currently and I'm reasonably confident it will be sufficient. I'm prepared to see how it goes to start with. I can always order a heatsink and fan later, or pop to PC World or Silicon Alley.

That's what it says. Each stick is £33.35. I'm edging towards Corsair, and swallowing the pain in my wallet as some kind of reliability fee.

Okay. Corsair it is. What a bitch it's Thursday already. I'm dead set on this now. Want to phone the place tomorrow to make sure I'm getting revision 2.0 of the A7N8X but then that means I won't get this stuff until Monday.

For the record:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 (Socket A) Motherboard (MB-019-AS)
£96.90
AMD Athlon "Thoroughbred" XP 2700+ 333FSB (Socket A) CPU - OEM (CP-031-AM)
£124.90
Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3200 TwinX (2x256MB) Platinum CAS2 (MY-017-CS)
£113.10
Subtotal £334.90
Shipping (Amtrak Next Day (Mon-Fri) - UK Mainland) £8.50
VAT £60.10
Total £403.50

LAST QUESTION, FELLAS! Thoroughbred 2700 or Barton 2800? Flip for it. :)

Right, 2800 it is. For those counting:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 (Socket A) Motherboard (MB-019-AS)
£96.90
Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3200 TwinX (2x256MB) Platinum CAS2 (MY-017-CS)
£113.10
AMD Athlon "Barton" XP2800+ 333FSB (Socket A) CPU - OEM (CP-038-AM)
£159.90
Subtotal £369.90
Shipping (Amtrak Next Day (Mon-Fri) - UK Mainland) £8.50
VAT £66.22
Total £444.62
What a lot of money. :/

You wont notice any difference between Corsair, or the 'Generic' TwinMOS if you aint overclocking that rig, and even if you are it will be fine :) But hey, if it makes you happy and gives you piece of mind go for it :)

I would go with the Barton if the cost isn't too hard to swallow :)

I would consider buying the 'chip in a box' retail AMD Chip +HSF package rather than OEM, as they are generally only 5 - 10 pounds more expensive, and carry 3 years warranty.

Not really, I spent £300 on just the Barton 2800+ when it came out :)
