New Graphics Card

I know this isn't the best place to be psting this, but there are no hardware forums on BW. I need a new graphics card cos i am pisseds of having 15 max fps in hl, but i am skint, so i need a graphics card that costs at a very max £70 that is good, and preferabely geforce 2.

get a geforce 2mx. They were 100 qud but i think u can get them for about 75 now. They will get u 80fps easy if the rest of ure pc is good

I have a 450Mhz AMD K6-2. Shall I upgrade to a 550Mhz, which will mean i don't have to buy a new motherboard, or should I save up more for a new motherboard, RAM and 800Mhz Duron package?

Yup, i have a Geforce2 MX. Very fast, not as fast as the Geforce2 GTS but still a very good card. I have seen them for £60, look around and you might see em cheaper. If you wanted to spend a little more you could prolly find a Geforce2 GTS for under £100. That gives you DDR memory which will give you better performance on the texture rich games.

The problem with the MX is it doesn't have much memory bandwidth. The SDR memory doesn't supplement the powerful GF2 GPU (processor on the card). So if i was you i would get the Prophet 2 MXn since it is the only Geforce 2 MX based card which comes with 183mhz ram instead of the usual 175 on al other MX based cards. You can then overclock it too in excess of 200 and you should be stomping.

You would see a lot more benefit from getting a new mobo package.

The gfx card does make a hell of a lot of difference tho my 1.2gig tbrid went up an extra 6000 3d marks when I fitted the geforce2 ultra instead of my TNT2 ultra

Tis true but ideally you need a good combination of both....having an ultra with a sub 500Mhz processor is just a waste

Or if you cant afford why not overclock? adding a extra 100mhz isnt going to give you great improvement.

Yeh overclocking is fun if it works out ok, but I actually roasted that 1.2gig Tbird and now use the AMD axia 1gig and it'l run me a nice stable 1.4 gig with 133 fsb and this is with out water cooling but some hefty fans and at the standard voltage

I would personally in your case still go for the geforce 2 MX tho

I used to have the same computer as you, but I upgraded to a Duron 800MHz and bought a Geforce 2 MX.

The bad thing with K6-2's are that they can't handle 3d graphics very well, so its very slow. The AMD Duron 800 and the Geforce 2 MX gets me between 50 - 100 fps. I know that my mates with Athlons have better FPS with the Geforce 2 MX, i dont think they mix too well
