The other thing - is that the planet is only 6 million miles from the sun. Earth is 93 million miles from the sun. Assuming we'd not be blinded by the sun (maybe the indigenous life forms have no eyes), then we'd probably all live for about 3 hours before the intense solar radiation kills us from cancer. The radiation / cancer thing is a big minus.

Land temperature of the planet is 0-40*c
The sun there is 10 (or 100) times smaller than our sun, so doesnt emmit much.
All they need to know is that if there's a proper atmosphere stopping the actual heat from killing everything.

Just though you should know.

That was a thing in the Sun today about what life would be like!

They would be watching televion from 1986 and all be small and dumpy, due to the high gravity!

The first thing that came to my mind, lol, where's the care-police when you need them =) I mean seriously, why should I care for some planet that is 20.3 lightyears away from us, meaning no human being will ever set foot there. I see this from two angles.

On the one side, I doubt humanity will even live long enough to finish such projects, cause at the current speed at which we're destroying our own planet, there won't be much left in a "few" years.

On the other side it's physically impossible to travel at the speed of light. This alone is not a problem though. I read a pretty interesting article about bending space. We all know that it's possible to bend stuff with enough mass. Now if that mass is getting bigger, you can even bend space itself. I don't think I have to tell you how much energy that needs, do I? =)

There's also something else. What advantage does it have to set foot on another planet, so we can destroy it aswell? And don't bullshit me, nobody will believe if you say that we can leave something unharmed. Humanity is permanently destroying stuff and it has always been like that. Tbh, if I was some alien being knowing about the earth, I'd shoot every human coming near to my planet or take him as prisoner :p

Also think about all the money wasted for such a little return. That whole space thing is really nice, as we're all having lots of profits from it, but let's just keep it to our planet, no need to send some useless piece of metal to Mars for a few billions. There's a lot of other interesting research to be done.

rep :)

if it is 20 light years away, means that the planet could have gone boom already!

pretty intresting stuff though, this coming into the news though means they cant get any detailed images of it to see if there is any life or such?

dont know why you got redpped for this its a pretty bad way to look at things.

Exploring space and finding out more things about it is the human race progressing, we could have just sat in caves and thought yeh this is alright, no need for anything better. When we made fire we werent aware that burning things might hurt the enviroment, why would we? we were aware it made us warm, looked fun and scared away big animals and also burnt things. We are now aware that we may be having certain effects, but we are investigating that and trying to change things.

We may not have the technology to reach that planet but for all we know they might, as for saying its not possible..... you cant comment on that because you dont work for NASA and you cant read the future either.

Could someone explain in a nutshell, or at least in non astro-physics terms, why we theoretically cant reach the speed of light? I know that Einstein theorised something about us being everywhere at once if we reached (or something like that) but I always think of the speed of light as being a constant, like the speed of sound, and something we could reach. What is theorised to happen if we hit that speed?

people say thigns differently

One is that we would end up smeared all over the cockpit of a shuttle, others say that time will stop still

You didn't read my post well m8 =)) I think development and research is very important, but I'd prefer if we focused on important things, rather than sending our money away to something that won't give any return, besides some beautiful pictures and some rocks from another planet =) Also, burning things isn't that bad, afaik burning a tree only sets as much CO² free as it took to grow =)

I might not work for the NASA and I'm not a physic expert either, but I've read some stuff about the problem and thus I give my comment =)

from my understanding of the formula the energy needed continues to increase as you increase the mass.

Accelerating up to the speed of light may well prove to be impossible. There are plenty of work-arounds though. People who think "omgz it's no good. speed of light is absolute m8s" should really check out some of the alternatives (I don't claim to be an expert, most of my knowledge of this comes from Discworld Science books :p).

But anyway, those who think this is "pointless" are exactly the kind of people that are stopping things like this happening. Forget destroying the planet, the human race is gradually losing its wander-lust. That's tragic. I'd give anything to be able to go into space and set foot on a brand new planet. If you're happy slobbing around with your TV dinners and Ikea furniature then that's your call, but it's a bit stupid to try and put the rest of us off.

I'm not saying we should put off space travel for ever, but there are enough problems here on Earth on which the money could be better spent solving. For example did you know it would only cost 9 Billion $ to provide water and sanatation for all?

And to NikonL im sure billions of people would love to have the oppurtunity to slob around with tv dinners and ikea furniture.

Please spare me the Bob Gedolf speeches. Mankind HAS to strive, other wise what's the point? When Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, there were (and still are) people in africa who had never seen a lightbulb. Are you saying that instead of putting a man on the moon, we should have spent the money on "equalising" the technology difference between different countries, so that we have 100's of mediocre technology-based countries, rather than high tech and low tech countries? Think of all the inventions that came out of the effort to land on the moon. Without people striving to improve technology, we don't have a hope in hell of wiping out poverty.

Theres thousands of people that have grown up with a dream to be scientists and work for NASA or whatever space-a-ma-jig. You cant just tell everyone in a certain industry to down tools and find another job because you feel that things should be spent elsewhere. People are trained in this and should be used, its part of the human race developing and discovering new things as far as im concerned, you cant just put that on hold.

Picking on things like this is like me saying to you, why the fuck you eating that chocolate bar? people are dieing and your sat there eating at your pc? also you could sell that pc and save people in africa! People could do more, but as always its someone elses problem. I guess everyones waiting for bill gates to die and give all his money to the american negro college fund or something as aparently he not giving any to his kids :p

There isnt really a "need" for anything, you could argue that the council should stop everything non essential and save the poor in africa because there is more "need" for them than us to drive around on smooth roads, empty bins and stuff like that. But how many peoples lives does that fuck up closer to home? a hell of a lot.

But another extremist view could be that its survival of the fittest and maybe theres too many people are on the planet and some will eventually have to die off. People study the effect in animals where populations rise and decline depending on several factors such as food supply, preditors ect. They study this without a thought and after all we are animals, some like to think we have more compassion, but there plently of reasons to suggest not from some acts, but yes not everyone is the same.

Its get real complicated when you start suggesting money should be used elsewhere, it starts affecting people more closer to home, not just scientist but engineers and the thousands upon thousands of people who have work because of such programmes.

Ive gone on a bit, some of it may not make sense but simply saying use money elsewhere is simple to say, but not simple at all. far far far from it.

I'm not saying that observing our own orbit is a bad thing (besides the fact that the moon-landing is still heavily discussed, givf FH thread about it tbh). Our daily life depends on satellites flying around us all the time, but does our daily life depend on some mass of metal flying to another planet? I don't think so.

I agree that we shouldn't spend the money on some random "equalization of technology" cause that leads to nothing in the end. I say that we should use the money to maybe do something for our planet instead. The US and China are blowing tons of toxins into the air each year because it's cheaper than spending money on clean technology. That pretty much is my point aswell, too. If we ever manage to get to some other planet we're gonna behave like the europeans in africa and america. We're gonna abuse the land and the population as much as we can, leaving a big mess behind, what a blessing for the wide space out there. Doesn't matter though, once we killed one planet we can proceed to killing the next one.

I say mankind is ready to go into space once we've taken responsibility for what we have here. It's only in politics where you get a better job for fucking up another one :p

My grandad told me that if you travel at the speed of light you'd become a photon!

In Neuromancer by William Gibson, first contact with aliens is done through an entity in cyberspace.

Give us 50 years and I can see Gibons vision coming true.

Like, far as im aware..nobody has held a press conference as said

A well known software tycoon did say that noone should ever need more than 640kb system ram in a computer, a few years back.

Theres a difference between equilizing technology and providing basic things such as education and clean water supplies to people...

Who's to say the people who could make this innovation aren't the ones dying before the age of 5 due to having no basic health care?

hmmm, 20.5 lightyears = 120 trillion miles, atleast according to some website i found after some digging :)

Being 120 trillion miles away from the nearest Macdonalds would just be too much to take! :(

if thats the case, any money you earn should be put to a charity that helps people in 3rd world countries. you should just work and work, then come home and live on the very basic needs - water and base line nutrition.
