Bah. Thats £450 on a computer :( Oh well. At least I'll be able to cheat at higher speeds now :)

Does it matter that the RAM is 1033 and the CPU is 1333?

That is good, my similar spec pc cost a £1k last November. I did go for a top of the range graphics card and had to buy a case and drives as well though.

I am thinking of putting this rig together during the fall:

INTEL CORE 2 E6750 2.66GHZ 1333/4M S775
ABit IP35 Pro Intel® P35 LGA 775
2GB 800MHZ DDR2 NON-ECC LOW-LATENCY CL4
Asus GeForce 8800GTX PCIE 768MB 384-BIT DDR3
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA-II 16MB
DVD+/-RW DL RAM 20X BLACK SATA
Antec P182 B Gun Metal Black Super Mid Tower
Antec TruePower Quattro 850W
Noctua S12-1200 Silent Case Fan 120mm

Would I encounter any compatability- or any other kind of problems with it? Should I get more cooling or even ditch the extra fan?

Oh another question. When I reinstall Vista from the CD, is it clever enough to install itself over the existing installation?

What about all this 64 bit bollocks? What does that mean (I know what 64 bits are, just not in PC/os terms)

BTW the above price doesn't include VAT, cos I don't pay it.

Rajmo - no problems that I can see, should run a peach. Extra cooling - don't think you'll need it, you should have enough as standard with the intel cooling and what is supplied with the case. Either way it'll be safe enough to put together and monitor the temperatures yourself then judge later on whether you need more cooling.

Tom - looks good. I've not actually tried installing Vista over itself but I've been led to believe it does the same thing as XP in the same situation - i.e. it'll keep your files etc but not much of the settings and drivers. I'd strongly suggest installing from absolute scratch to prevent saturation of the registry and general compatibility issues.
As far as 64 bit goes - play on the safe side and stick with 32bit. Up until around now, driver support for 64 bit was limited, it has improved massively (enough for a lot of people to now go entirely 64bit) but still pays to check the hardware for 64bit drivers first. Performance wise there's not a huge amount to be gained now, if anything at all - it's more of a futureproofing thing than anything else - paving the way for larger amounts of memory and addressing.

My feeble mind is not powerful enough to grasp the concept of re-installing vista onto my existing setup. Probably because when I got my first sata drive years ago it insisted on calling itself E:\ rather than C:\, so everything is installed on E:\.

So I'm off to buy a new case and a new HD from Scan, and I'm putting XP on it because frankly I'm sick of all the HD activity on Vista, and because its too slow.

Oh and the cpu heatsink is bloody silly. Things are orbiting around it as I type. The gfx card had to be brought upstairs like you would when you've bought a new bed or wardrobe. It only just fit through the door! I suspect when I turn it on, the lights in the house will all dim.

What does the fat 4 pin connector near the CPU do? Theres 2 plugs that fit it from the PSU, do I plug one into it? What happens to the other one?
Thats your ATX_12V line, Its normal usage is for supplying more juice to the CPU. Plug the one that fits and wrap the one that doesnt away somewhere out of the way.
Seen 8pin ATX_12V for the latest AM2 processors from AMD, dont worry about the one that doesnt fit (thats usually for 2nd core on the AM2)

that manual is mahooooossssssiiiivvvee! (10mb!)
Also does the PCI-E power connector from the PSU go into the gfx card power socket?

You sorta just answered your question yourself :p more juice for the graphics as well.

I have to pimp both the Antec P18* range and Silverstone cases, both a few £££ but well worth it. Antec if you want silence, Silverstone for space (and cooling in both of them rocks)

Im now sorely tempted to upgrade my old Athlon64 rig to C2D

Typing from old computer here.

Right, I've plugged it all together and installed XP, everything is up and running, but I can't get it to connect to the internet.

I get a 'did not assign network address to the computer' fault. The little icon in the bottom right says something like 'limited connectivity'.

The driver is installed for the ethernet socket and seems fine.

The ethernet cable is connected to my Virgin Media modem downstairs, which is working fine as I'm using that connection right now.

Is this some kind of problem that Virgin need to solve? I remember having a similar issue the last time I upgraded, apparently because I changed my MB they need to do some 'things' at their end to get it working again.

Here are some numbers:

Ok ignore that one, I solved it by rebooting the modem.

Now all thats left is to stick my old drive in there and copy all my shit across.

Holy shit. Theres something to be said about playing TFC2 in 1680x1050 with everything turned full on, and not the slightest bit of noticeable lag in any respect. Motion blur too.....

Does anyone know how to 'get into' junction folders on my Vista HD?

Oh I see what you mean.

Vista :
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\RandomNumbers\bookmarks.html

XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\RandomNumbers\bookmarks.html

Shouldn't have any problems copying from one to the other - I never has, not sure why XP would have issue with it :/

Tom if you're directly plugged in to the virgin box I'm assuming it's not a router. It'd be worth getting one because as it is, you've probably got an external IP on your machine. This isn't ideal from a security perspective. A router will do network address translation, thus hiding your pc from the net, in a manner of speaking.

Plus, it's only about 30 quid for a router, if even that - definitely worth it.
