Some sort of malicious software has probably worked its way onto your system, really you should have a firewall up before connecting to the net. Either that or you have now pumped it that full of AV/Spyware/Adware protection software that its slowing it down.

Press ctrl + alt + delete and tell us how many processes are running, cpu usage, PF usage / commit charge

Updates windows as soon as possible before using internet, make sure you have all the updates too, i think you will need around 4 reboots or so before you got all of them.

Average time an uprotected comp remains uninfected if connected to the net: 13 min.

Best thing when using a brand new comp for the first time is to have a cd with firewall programs etc ready, and install that before connecting to the net for the first time. Or just use a hardware firewall.

Keep running anti spyware and viruscleaners etc and hope you get it all. Failing that, burn a cd with a firewall, then format c: and reinstall everything without connecting to the net. Shouldnt be that much of a bother if the comp is new :)

There's more updates after SP 2 make sure you get those. That's normal for it not to pop up again, just go into control panel to configure it's settings.Spyware increases very fastly too, it's worth ridding it every few days/week.

Best way as far as I know is firewall!

Reformat again Cozak. Before you connect to the net install any Windows updates you have on cd's or stored somewhere. (Best thing would be to have WinXP SP2 on a cd and just install it)

Then install firewall or use the built in Windows firewall. Then connect to the net, go to the Windows Update website, update - as Sycho said most likely will require a couple of reboots and updates until Windows Update will be happy.

Then get antivirus soft, update. Then Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Scan everything. Should be fine :p (though you could install antivirus software before you start updating windows through win update, matter of choice, I'm not sure whats better to do first)

I know that if I leave my computer with no firewall on for about 10 mins it always gets infected, and I mean ALWAYS.

aye get firewalls up BEFORE hitting the net on any new computor..these days its mad..the moment you connect you are infested..and i mean INFESTED...without a firewall you can end up with a nightmare.
