It's time for it to go, my cupped Clio 182 is about to go after only 10 months and nine thousand miles. It's just too small and too unreliable (living up to its French reputation).

Trading it in against a 2002 Impreza WRX in black, 44k miles on the clock. About fecking time I did the japanese saloon thing. In standard tune (225 bhp), not the quickest of Imprezas, but a full exhaust system and a remap will soon sort that out.

I know there are a couple of Scooby owners here, so is there anything I should check before buying (from a dealer)?

Not really luv, they are pretty bullet proof if they have been looked after. Personally I would like to see that the oil has been changed every 3000 miles.

It will probably judder when cold and the clutch will bite straight away but both of those things are Impreza niggles.

Like I said to RB the qouted BHP is bollocks and I expect it will certainly feel faster than its meant to be.

There is one problem though, once you go the scooby way its very hard to find something that floats your boat as much after getting rid.

I sold mine a week ago and already i'm looking for another one.

Oh, get a Dawes manual boost controller on it, about £50 and they make shitloads of difference, piece of piss to fit as well.

Also chum, be sure to register on scoobynet, absolutely the best motoring site by a mile for help, advice and cheap bits - http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/

Let me know when you get it Hamish :D

Get ready to attract the attention of every idiot on the roads. Oh, and don't try it on with any TVRs on the straights - because you'll lose every time :D

Nice car though :)

Well I've owned mine for less than 2 weeks so I haven't got a clue what to look for beyond what Trem told me.

All I can say though is that I am having a blast. It is no doubt true that there are faster cars on the road, and that teh scooby has a poor image, but pure bang for your buck performance is difficult to beat.

I hope you enjoy your's as much as I am enjoying mine :)

Next purchase

I wouldnt mind a new car really... my Audi 80 is off the road for the moment due to some ignition problem, another problem in the line of problems ive had with it. The problem is i LOVE it, i really do, when it works its the best thing ever. But the problems are getting me down at the moment.

Im currently in my Mitsu Shogan, but, i just dont like it... It scares me so much, if i put my foot down the maximum i get out of it is about 70mph ;s, and if its windy you can just forget about going over about 50mph, corners are a bitch too, i feel like im gonna tip when i do ;s.

Ive been interested in all a decent car which doesnt have any problems, i wanted to stick with Audi (Because of the 80) but im willing to change, it just has to be as good and quick off the mark as it. Dont wanna go over the £3k mark though, cheap maybe, but heyho. I *shouldnt* have a problem with insurance i think, being 21 and never making an insurance claim or being on the wrong side of the law..

Decisions decisions.. :/

/edit

Something like this caught my attention... and very close to were i live ;s, but again, its all down to insurance !

Nah it's a bugeye, but a set of Morettes and Xenon headlight conversion will sort that out.

Yes absolutely. Morettes improve them no end.

Is it 5 or 6 speed? Sorry fella, I'm not too up on the newer models. I think it will be 5 speed though, maybe just the STi's are 6 speed.

RB - I'm chuffed you like it chum, there is no going back now like I said. Evo's are too tame(no turbo kick) and M3's are too gay. What did you do with your VR6? I am kind of after one of them as a runaround for the time being.

Your insurance would be more than the car Gray. Out of interest go and get a quote. I bet it won't be under £2000. Then you will HAVE to have a Tracker fitted(Norwich Union don't ask for one though).

TVR's are class, barring the tendancy for a need for a fair amount of maintainance. Presuming you dont mind / can cope with that, id love one.

Yup, running costs are around £1000 - £3000 a year on an RV8 engined TVR. Mind you, the depreciation is quite low, and the fuel costs aren't that bad (30mpg with roof up on motorway).

They also retain a fair amount of exclusivity, and the ability to own just about everything on the roads, bar the odd stupidly supercharged saloon and a supercar here and there. I had a mini 'race' with a Boxster S just the other night, he couldn't get away from me :)

Bang for buck, they're unbeatable IMO.

Well at the moment it's still in my garage :)

I have got a deposit off a guy who's trying to get someone to drop him down here to pick it up though.

I guess he'll be back and if he isn't you can have it :D

Some insurance companies insist on a tracker, some don't. I can't see them being much use on an older car anyway. The type of theft they guard against is people taking cars to sell on, not joy riders/ram raiders etc. Who'd want to nick and sell on a 8 year old scooby when there's plenty of newer more desirable ones around?

For a laugh Gray do get a quote, I'd love to know, though I'm not sure you'll find too many companies queuing up to have you as a customer. Go to confused.com put in yer details and tell us the range of prices you get :)

The best I've got is £370 from Norwich Union but for teh moment I have just paid the extra to change my old Elephant policy and will ring around more carefully next May when it expires.

Highest i got from confused.com was £4771, and lowest was £3760.. quite... large seemingly.

altho i only have like 4 accepted quotes, some companies were "closed", the others refused to do it for imported vehicles, and others were just plain old meanies.

Bad luck gray, 'fraid you need to be an old git to get cheap insurance :(

To be fair though you'd get a lot knocked off those prices if you went for a UK car and not an import, though maybe not enough to be able to afford.

It's a 5 speed, only the STi's are 6 speed like you say.

I test drove it today. It's certainly not night and day faster than the 182, but it's definitely quicker. I loved the torque, pulls so well in the midrange... and the grip, woah the grip is good. The 182 is always twitchy getting the power down, particularly on uneven roads and even worse in the wet. The Scooby just... goes.

I like it a lot, good speed with the practicality i need. My only probs were losing Xenon headlights and the alcantara interior of the 182, but I can sort the headlights out with an HID conversion once I put Morettes on it.

I did have one problem on the test drive; i stalled the car and it wouldn't start again (battery was dead). It's been on the forecourt for so long that there was bugger all charge in the battery, so they're going to change the battery and i'll go out in it again; I really need to give it some welly above 60 mph and throw it round some corners.

Great car :).

The confidence they fill you with is amazing...as long as you are a decent driver. I never ever managed to wheelspin either of my Impreza's(didn't exactly try lots) because the grip is so good.

They are ugly, cheap interior, common, getting a bad name, but oh my fucking god they are brilliant at what they do.

I miss mine :(

Try AutoTorque for a quote, they're getting very popular with My Lotus club, I know it's not a Lotus, but they seem to understand performance cars. You could say a SELOC member put you onto them, might help. The best quote, when I went through confused.com, was about 1200, I ended up paying 600 with AutoTorque, you have to ring these people.

Leon Cupra is alright, wouldn't call it blindingly quick (all relative i suppose) and i've heard some bad tales from a couple of owners about their reliability.

I know they're an A3/Golf underneath, but the reliability of those cars is questionable too.

You mean a MK2 surely?

The MK1 is a) slow for what it's meant to be b) handles like a fat girl on a water bed.

The MK2 however, woosh, great car... just a bit pricey.

BZZTT.

Not buying the Impreza after all, finally struck a deal on something a lot more special.

I get it on saturday!
