Frankly I'm surprised there aren't more of them over there.
Guns being so prolific, Americans being as they are, it's no wonder more of them don't pop up.

I recently read (it was in German, so no point in posting a link, I guess) that the percentage of illegally owned guns in Europe is nearly equal to the percentage of legally owned guns in the US.

Does anyone remember that kid in East Germany that killed about 20 people in his local school?
Made the High School massacre in Littleton look somewhat small.

I honestly think that we Europeans aren't any better than the yankees - our serial killers just don't get the same news coverage.

That would imply that the majority of families in Europe has an illegal gun in their house, since most American families own a legally held one. So Id take that German propaganda with a pinch of salt tbh

Statistically, GDW - not every American household has a gun/s.
Just like in: not every European household has a gun/s.

Take, for example, the liberal New England States. Many cities have extremely strict gun laws there.
Far fewer households have guns there than - lets say Texas households.

Catch my drift? Claiming that we Europeans have no gun problems would be GDW propaganda, I guess. ;)

But how can they compare the statistics for legal guns in the US (all registered centrally I assume) with the statistics for illegal guns in the UK? I can just see the door to door survey...

"Do you have any illegal weapons sir?"

"Why yes, I have two shotguns under the bed, a pistol under the pillow, and an AK74 under the floorboards, just in case"

Thats exactly what my reply was going to be Will.

Uncle Sick I still think that its an article not to be taken too seriously, as Will has implied, they cant possibly perform a sample survey that would be statistically representative of the whole of Europe in which the people responding admitted truthfully that they held illegal guns.

Im not saying that there isnt a gun problem in certain parts of Europe ( I know because Ive lived in Northern Ireland all my life). Im just saying that theclaim that this article is making (based on what you have told us) is nonsense.

If you actually read the thread, you might find it wasn't 'full of generally uneducated crass american stereotypes'.

Only two posts came close to stereotyping them, and that's their opinion...

Or am I misunderstanding the word 'stereotype'?

:(

That's the problem with statistics, I guess...

The article was not solely based on illegal, unregistered guns (gun fetishists, collectors) but also on the very legal gun/rifle clubs, which - I am sure - also exist in the UK, France, Spain etc...

Germany has some of the most rigid laws on gun possession - people just find ways around them. Like members of gun clubs being able to purchase 12 gauge shotguns and the likes.

The kid in Erfurt had a 12 gauge shot gun - legally purchased because he was in a gun club and had a license for it.
Which he couldn't use do to some malfunction - he killed 20 people with a Glock. Makes you wonder how many more he would have gotten if that shotgun would have worked properly, eh?

What I was trying to say is: we shouldn't point fingers at the Americans because their (in some states, mind you) gun laws are more liberal than ours.

I think it would be interesting to compare gun related crimes between Europe and the US.
My opinion (mine, ya hear me?;)) - crimes in Europe/rest of the world are just as violent as over there... the killers in the US just get better news coverage.

I agree :p

Any way IIRC the number of gun related murders in the US is more than a number of countries, escapes me which countries, put together even though they have a greater population that US when combined.

I always like the way Americans say it is their right to bear arms under the constitution, this amendment of the American constitution is so out of context to modern day America.

Like the "you can shoot a scotsman with a longbow on a sunday in the city of whatever-cester" laws in the UK... ? ;)

You should all go watch the excellent documentary by Michael Moore, Bowling for Columbine, then come back here. For example, Canada has more guns than the US, but fuck all gun-related murders.

And Sick, that law doesn't actually exist. While the law wasn't technically repealed, there is a law which states that all stupid old laws don't count.

Tbh you would also have to look what each country puts as their definitions, for instance the us general, in charge of the drugwar, thought that the amount of murders were the same in Holland as in the USA, it turned out that in holland the attempts were also included in the stats while not in the USA. So saying the amount of guns etc might be not true, also I think in Europe they might include guns of terrorist/freedom groups, and I dont think they are normal house holds. Also they would have exclude east europe, especially those countries that had a civil war.

I saw "Bowling for Columbine", Will.

What does it prove for you, though? That every Amercian is a gun crazy lunatic?

Yes, it's nice to have something to bash - I admit jumping the anti-America bandwagon from time to time but it comes down to statistics sometimes.

It's like assuming that every Englishman has a longbow and every German likes beer.

Around 9k deaths a year (according to above statistic) is alot - admittedly. But these 9k deaths aren't equally distributed all over the country rather than mainly focussed on certain high crime areas like the famous Bronx or what have you...

Gee, I lived in the US for 8 years and no one I knew had a gun or lost someone by a gun crime/accident.
Guess it depends on where you live - as always.

I have three guns, and I live in the back of nowhere... Am I strange?

Besides, people are stupid. People will shoot other people. Giving people guns, swords, axes, and other dangerous pointy things, is not good.

I had a whole rant typed out here, but I deleted it, because it sounded awful. Bah.

Those statistics just prove that Europe is among one of the safest places to live in the world. Especially when you consider countries such as China, Korea or Somalia which would bump out the European countries if their statistics were available.

And Trog do shotguns for shooting pheasants and Haggis count;)

In Switzerland you can be jailed for driving a little bit too fast, but you can quite legally buy an automatic rifle. Personally I think anybody who is unbalanced enough to want to shoot innocent people will get a gun whether or not they are legal or otherwise.

That's about the size of it; the same goes for those foolish reports that try and blame video games (or violent films)... I mean, who calls them video games anyway? Old fuddy duddies who've never even seen a computer game...

Did that report say the amount of illegal guns in Europe is equal to the amount of legal guns in America? What about the illegal guns in America? Sorry if this doesn't make sense, very sleepy...
