Am leaving work to go home so cant go too far into detail. iirc the Intel quad cores use 2 cpu's with 2 cores and everything is exactly the same speed.

AMD supposidly have 1 cpu with a dual core that run's 50/50, the other cpu run's at 70/30.

Their idea was so that you still got quad core, but on game that only support single core, you'd use the 70% core as the primary.

Times change so masybe this is nolonger the case.

According to the tests I have seen the Phenom CPU's falls about 10-15% under the equivelent of Intel's 1 year old ones. Which is kind of sad really, whats even more sad is that the Intel ones are also cheaper :S

apparantly the new AMD ones are good uptill the Q6600 (quad core 2.4GHz) then their rubbish, and far more costly than anything Intel has to offer above that.

Havent got one myself, but it seems AMD has fallen short again, and it seems also in the graphics department, where there latest GPU's have fallen short of Nvidia:(

Just built myself a new machine. Up until this one I have always been a fan of AMD and would pick ATI over Nvidia... however so glad I didnt.

Running quad core Intel and it is just so much better then I would of thought, couple that with a XFX 8800GTX and it just makes any other machine seem insignificant. Cant see anything AMD doing will change the market outlook, unfortunately I think Intel have well and truely taken over the processor market once more.

Not sure what you guys need the new CPUs for.

I don't know any video game on the market that doesn't run flawlessly in high resolution with maxed settings with my 8600 GTS and an AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800.

That setup will be spitting blood at Crysis and the other games that are on the way.

Well actually Manich got a point - unless youre buying the top top top stuff, AMD is still very competitive...

Altso take into consideration that when you buy their new platform - spider i believe they call it you wont have to upgrade for a loooong long time since they plan on making future cpu's run on that same platform which means buying less harware in the long run and saving you time reconfiguring...

because if you are going to upgrade why not get a nice cheap intel x2 core?

Cod4/Crysis/Bioshock/AoC/WAR etc would laugh at that system in a decent rez(above 1100 ...)

Good info. Especially as my main rig PSU blew last night. Time for a new PSU, Case, Mobo, uP, in fact everything but the drives. Told the misses the PSU damaged everything so has to be replaced:rolleyes:. Oooh I'm sooo going to hell!

Intel Quad Core E6600 2.4GHz S775
Gigabyte S775 nForce 680 SLI ATX 8CH HD Audio Quad GLan
Or Asustek S775 nForce 680i ATX Audio Lan

Already have two 7900 GS Cards for the SLi - thought they were bad.

Probably need new Ram with it as well, anyone know speed I'll need with this setup. Have 4Gb of PC3200 Fast Geil Ram not sure if that will do?

Its either a Q6600 you'll be buying or an E6600, not a quad e6600 :)

The AMD chips offer very good value for money. If you want the best performance money can buy then its intel, if you're not so anal about that then AMD is still a very good option.

I was speaking to a friend of mine who owns a computer shop the other day and it so happened we were talking AMD. Seems the AMD dual core 5000 chip is rather nice if you want to say hello to 4GHz processing. Ok, it needs some serious cooling but you can overclock just about everything else on the board to the max and so he assures me, that pisses on anything out there on the market at this moment in time ;)

If you say so :kissit:.

Neither AoC or Warhammer are out. CoD 4 runs with best settings flawlessly on my system (1280x1024).

Plenty of people are making up shit gfx/HDs/ram with a better CPU, that's not my approach.

give or take a brand name or 2, thats about right
"shiny new thing" = pay lots more than you should for something you wont need till next year, when its 40% the price it is now

for comparison purposes, im running a 6850 (core2 duo 3gig Conroe) and GF 8800 GTX, and i can play Bioshock, COD 4 and Crysis (release not demos) at 1680x1050 widescreen, everything on "max/ultra high" <DX9 , wont use Vista> and it goes like shit off a stick, so on that scale , er you would be wrong :)
