Has anyone had any experience with NAS Drives. I want to replace my "file server" node on my network for something abit more dedicated and simple.

I was looking at products similar to the Buffalo LinkStation or TeraStation, I like the idea you can expand them by simply plugging in a USB Drive, and some provide RAID capability.

Any suggestions ?

I have a linkstation (250Gb version), works fine, nice easy to use web interface, plays well with Windows (Samba) and Unix (NFS). Not sure you really need RAID outside of a corporate NAS though, I just back up the crucial files on mine to my computer.

The Linkstation is actually a powerpc running linux, so you can do a lot of softmodding (http://kurobox.com/), but I have a linux box for that.

I used to have a SnapServer which was very nice, although being an older model it was a bit slow at times but the newer models come with nice fast HDs.

Out of interest, can you get a file server unit on its own, with just USB ports to attach drives to and no drive actually inside it ?
