I am going onto NTL soon and I will be wanting a wireless router. I do want Netgear. I am happy with my Belkin router and I also have a Netgear wireless router but its only for ADSL, my Belkin stopped working last night after I punched it and the Netgear was thrown at the wall but carried on working so obviously I have to go with Netgear now.

Which model Netgear will serve my needs when I go onto NTL?

Thanks in advance and also you rock Nath in advance.

Rangemax might be over the top. The silver ones are flakey and awful.

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=2HZ6 is what you want, and contrary to the picture it's actually the newest type. It'll sort you out good n proper. NTL can sometimes be a pain to set up with routers - lemme know if you need any help with it trem.

Does this mean it has no ethernet ports at all, or at least not one that will act as an uplink? Because if it does have such a port then it should do the job fine.

I can't add much more than that, as whilst we have a Netgear WG602 wireless router here it's only used for the laptop and connects directly into my linux router which does most of the work (and it uses a VPN with the non-VPN'd network firewalled from doing anything but the VPN). But it does seem to 'just work'.

Aye thats right Athan me old china, it only has an 'in' bit for adsl phone line time thingy. But apart from that I beat it up and it doesn't work at all now it did work after the incident so it may of been delayed shock but last night it stuck 2 fingers up at me when I tried to connect.

I showed him good who's boss

I'd trap my own balls in the door before buying a netgear wireless router. I had one 3 years ago and ended up swapping it out for a linksys one 3 days after it went out of warranty. Just developped a fault where the ports would constantly oscillate up and down. The linksys router I had was lovely - although I've heard bad press about their newer slinkier models overheating alot.

I'd go with something that has good reviews on ebuyer tbh tremmers

Linksys have the most hideously unpleasant web interface evar.

Old netgears are pants - if you had one 3 years ago, it was probably one of the silver ones, non? If so, they were crap. The current white netgears are very decent, reliable, robust and a piece of cake to set up.

Ath - for broadband routers, if you're going through ADSL it'll have the phone port and usually 4 ethernet ports. These 4 ports won't be useable for cable internet. You need a WAN port for that - I don't think it's quite the same as an uplink port though, as any of the 4 ports on the ADSL will behave as an uplink for connecting to other network switches.

I have an old grey Netgear DG834 (v1), never had a problem with it in 2-3 yrs.
The Linksys web interface isn't brilliant, but it works ok IMO.

Am I right in thinking this Rangemax(that is sitting on my desk right now) will only work with another cable/dsl modem plugged into it? I take it it isn't an adsl modem as well.

I hope not becuase it isn't working if it is :(

If you've bought the WPNT834, it's for cable connections only (NTL/BY).
There's another Rangemax model for ADSL.

btw, connect to it over a wired connection first, the wireless option will need to be enabled.

Cheers for that.

Yeah I know about the wired thingy first. I just assumed that all routers did both or just dsl.

Bloody dear for just a cable router then, ah well I am tied into NTL for a year anyways.

Thanks again.
