Net Split in IRC

Hi Guys

Every so often I see people disconnect from IRC due to (net.* split.*) or something similar. I have also been victim of this, where I get diconnected and for a few mins cant connect back up, when I do the channels I am performed in are empty and then suddenly it appears if everyone joins again.

What is this? Why does it happen?

/server uk.quakenet.org
/server b0rk.uk.quakenet.org

or whatever.
